Need Help from Indytravel or other natives!

Back to Indiana University for another class towards the end of September. Rather than staying at the University Place Hotel, which was convenient but an all around miserable hotel stay, I've been checking out The Yellow Rose Inn on Delaware Street. Any locals comments? TIA

You haven't said natives of where, or what you're interested in in your subject line, so the chances of getting someone familiar with that inn to open this thread are pretty slim. Why not repost with the name of the inn and city in your subject line so that anyone familiar with it will know to click?

University Place Hotel is convenient to the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis, Indiana. That's about all it is though.

I've not stayed at the Yellow Rose Inn so I can't help you with the Inn. For my short weekend stays I find better deals through Priceline in downtown rather then stay out a little further in the near north side B&B's.

I did walk through there about a year ago. The area is very gentrified. It has lots of older restored homes, a few churches along with some newer houses and a few low-story apartment buildings. Two historical homes are in the area, Butler-Morris House and the President Benjamin Harrison Home. I visited them both with a friend. They are worth a look if you have the time.

For me it's easy walking distance (less than a mile) to the Mass. Ave. area with lots of funky shops, art galleries and excellent dining. You do have to walk under said interstate which some people might find creepy after dark. It doesn't bother me.

The area is close to I-65 so interstate noise is common. Not as bad as it could be due to curves in the highway and slower 55mph speed limit. In the same vein Delaware is a big road one-way north out of downtown. It will have some heavy traffic during the evening rush hour.

I thought University Place Hotel was boarded up and being refurbished. If so, and if its done, maybe its worth a second look.

And moneygirl, if you need a dinner partner while in Indy I'd be happy to go anywhere your little heart desires. Just give me a holler here. Shucks we might even get ole Indy to come with.

jlm mi, That would have made it way to easy... I knew Indytravel would find it... and I was right!

indytravel, thanks for coming to my rescue. I stayed at the University place about 2 1/2 years ago and no matter how nice their recent renovations may be, I will never go back.

I would like to see the USS Indianapolis Memorial on my one free day and snoop around the shops in the evenings. Any restaurants not to be missed?

Betty at the Yellow Rose Inn has been so good to me that I think I will book there. The website is gorgeous and she's willing to give me a nice discount since I'm staying for three nights mid week.... and I'm planning on renting a car.

amwosu, what a nice offer! After my plans are firmed up I'll let you know when I'm coming! I've never been to a Fodor's GTG and it sounds like fun!

I love the Scholar's Inn on Mass Ave. http://www.scholarsinn.com/cafeindy/about.shtml

Good for dinner and also for Sunday brunch- not a buffet style brunch, just good food AND 1/2 price champagne cocktails...

moneygirl I would love to find out what you think about the Yellow Rose. I've kinda wanted to stay at a few of the B&B's on the near NE side but always get sucked into Priceline bidding.

Unfortunately the University Place is starting to come up again as a downtown "win" at the 3 star level. If I won it, I'd live though I think it's a little far out. Cab fare within downtown is a reasonable flat rate of $5. I think it reaches out as far as University place.

The whole Canal Walk with the USS Indianapolis Memorial, fountains, bridges, art, Congression Medal of Honors Winners Memorial, government center and museums is very nice. People in the know sometimes drive downtown, park their cars and walk the canal rather then walk at home.

As amwosu mentioned the Scholars Inn is excellent. Also on Mass. Ave. are Agio, R's Bistro and Elements for nice dining. Of the 4 Agio's (with a full bar ) is probably my favorite. R's and Elements only have a beer/wine license. Scholar's Inn is full service too. And like amwosu I love their real (non-buffet!) brunch but you won't be in town on the weekend. At the end of this post I'll put some "canned" blurbs I keep updated for downtown dining.

For evening shopping the aforementioned Mass. Ave area is pretty nice for funky shops that aren't so mainstream.

Since you'll have a car I'll mention downtown metered parking. Street side parking meters in all of Indianapolis are only in effect from 7:00am to 6:00pm Monday through Friday. Outside those hours it's free. The only exception I know of is around Monument Circle. I think the meters run until 9:00pm there maybe going to 11:00pm soon. You don't have to pay holidays either.

I'd be up for meeting for a dinner. It would be fun.

Massachusetts Avenue
---------------------------

Agio - www.agiorestaurant.net

Billed as "American Eclectic" their food leans a little to Italian. I've had some excellent meals there. I usually order the one of the chef's specials for the evening. (I also make a point of emphasizing to my server I'm there for dinner as they've been burned too often. Some people think they can pop in pre-theater, order a fab meal of 4 courses and get out in 40 minutes. They make great food at Agio's. It won't happen in 40 minutes.) The outdoor patio is very nice in pleasant weather.

R's Bistro - www.rbistro.com

Regina (the "R" in the bistro) likes to serve reasonably sized portions so a diner can actually eat dessert for a change. With only a beer and wine license I like to eat there. She changes the menu every week to reflect available products and seasons. If you love something on the menu you'll have to find out when it'll be on next or come back the next night.

After a few people gave me the "not getting my money's worth" speech I have to be careful who I take to this place. Mainly because I retaliate with the "haven't you gotten your money's worth more than enough times" speech.

Elements - 415 N. Alabama St

Stopped here for a light dinner a few months ago. I had roasted quail appetizer on a bed of beans. Skipped to a dessert of butternut squash crepe with a sage & orange sorbet. Both dishes were delicious and beautifully prepared. They only have a beer and wine license.

Scholar's Inn - www.scholarsinn.com

Mixed menu of some beef, pork and seafood. Pretty interior with very good food. One of the best Sunday brunches around. The real Sunday brunch too. The one with a special menu. Not a buffet. 1/2 price champagne cocktails to boot.

Rathskeller - www.rathskeller.com

Hearty German fare in an old community center built in the early 1900's. Weiner schnitzel, sausages and sauerkraut. Other milder food is also available. Fun beer garden with weekend live music in the warm season. Lots of great German beers on tap.

Thanks so much.... I am not sure of my dates yet... was hoping to squeeze this in in Sept ot Oct... will post back when I know for sure.

The class I'm taking at the University if in the same building as the University Place Hotel but I'm just not doing that again. The Yellow Rose is a short drive from there...so I'm going to splurge and enjoy myself! I will post a report, I promise!
