Belle,
Litchfield (if this is the area in question) is only 1st night, somewhere to rest our weary old bones.
Our holiday is leaf peeping & site seeing, we will be visiting, Massachutes, Vermont, etc and going over to Rhode Island to see Mansions and back along Connecticut coast back to JFK for return to Manchester UK.

AnnRiley: From Stamford, you can drive north on Route 7 (through back roads to get to 7 if you hve a local map) up to New Milford, then East on Route 202(?) to Litchfield. It really is a town NOT to be missed, as one of the most historic and full of 18th and 19th century houses, just driving thru would give you a flavor, and then you can wander on north to Western Massachusetts. (You'd think I worked for the Litchfield Chamber of Commerce, but I've driven to and thru that town all my life and am still in awe of its mostly unspoiled perfection, at least on North Main St. , and South Main St.) Enjoy your trip.

Be aware that the drive up route 7 will take longer than it looks.
