Mt. Sinai area - sublet question

I am counting on the Fodorite knowledge for help for my daughter.

She is a medical student and will be moving to NYC to work at Mt. Sinai hospital for the month of August. She is having difficulity in locating a sublet. The trouble seems to be when she mentions that her husband will be living there for 1 week while he finds a permanent home for them in the Bronx area. Rates then go sky-high.

I would appreciate any help you can give us. I am unfamiliar with the area so a suggestion of a potential area within reasonable commuting distance for my knowledge would also be appreciated.

Are they sure they want to live in the Bronx? Do they know the various neighborhoods and modes of tranport?

Some are quite pleasant (Riverdale) but others can be VERY dicey.

There are many buildings that rent short-term to corporate transfers. Since this is only one month - have they looked into those?

I'm lost. She needs a sublet for a month, husband is staying only a week?? And that week is the problem? Something's wrong. Mt. Sinai should have some help. What's the budget for the month of August? Is it that the places she's checking are just renting rooms, not an apt?

Mt. Sinai must have some sort of service that handles this-or search the bulletin boards in the hospital for sublets. And dont tell the renter aboout the husband.

Thanks for all replies. I think I was not very clear in the original post.

She's working at Mt. Sinai hospital for 1 month. Budget is maybe $800 sublet for the month only. I believe this is an individual apt vs. a rented room. I suggested she not say anything about husband being there for 1 week only. I guess I don't understand why the rates should go so much higher just because another person is there for a week. I'm from a more rural area and guess I don't understand city pricing. Mt. Sinai hospital should be able to help possibly with a sublet? I will pass this along.

They will be moving to Bronx or north of the Bronx so he can continue at Fordham. These two events are just overlapping at the moment.

I personally would love to know Bronx neighborhoods and north Bronx neighborhoods they should look into. Always concerned for their safety. I always love Fodorite advice as well.

Thanks for your replies. I am passing the info along.

If she's renting her own apt., whether there's one person or two (or six frankly) should not be an issue. So it makes me think either these are not entire apts. but maybe a room or maybe it's b & b's or something? $800 seems low for something decent.

I seriously doubt $800 is a realistic budget for something that's relatively safe & not crawling with vermin.

Definitely contact the hospital for housing assistance.

Here's a page right from the Forham website and the areas around the campus

Here's a link to finding an apt. from the NY Times

I so appreciate everyone's help.

I agree the number of people shouldn't matter. But it does seem to matter. Seems like a way to take advantage of people.

I passed along the information. Thanks again.
