While most people have have visited FL not too many of us live there. And many of your questions (buying a business - what type? where are the opportunities?) where to live, safety, taxes, property values, etc are things that are best investigated on a relocation sight.

If you google there are several sites that provide a lot of statistics and will help you figure out some options to explore. I would definitely spend several months living in whatever area you are interested in before making a decision to move.

(I had 2 sets of aunts/uncles who retired to FL. One just hated the weather and within 2 years moved back near northern VA to live. The others kept their house in FL for use part of the year but spent from end of May though esrly Oct with their children in NY to escape the unbearable heat in FL wich prevented them from going out n the summer.)

Everybody wants to do what you are planning, i.e, - spend our days relaxing and/or playing, buying an inexpensive home, starting a business with little or no money and only working a couple hours a day. Great life if you can do it but unless you have an independent source of income (such as a family trust or health savings) it's not going to be easy.

First, how much capital do you actually have to invest in your "business"?

Do you have enough working capital and or savings to support yourself for whatever time it takes to get your business established and turning a profit?

What type(s) of business are you considering? How much experience and what qualifications do you have working in that particular field?

How much do you have set aside for the purchase of your 2BR home? Are you looking for a single family residence or perhaps a condo?

Where in Florida are you thinking of residing? It's a big state - almost 66,000 sq. miles with rural areas, big cities and suburbs. There are costal areas and interior areas.

Easy, I have lived in Florida for 40 years and I can tell you it's not for everybody. Suggest you try staying here for a month in the summer to see if you can take the heat, rain, bugs, crowds, etc. Also where you reside makes a bit difference, do you want to live on the coast or inland, South Florida is quite a bit different than north Florida, west coast different than east coast. Of course some areas are much much more expensive than others in both to purchase real estate and to live. Hurricanes are rare but there is always the threat from June to October. It rains a lot (possibly every day) for short periods of time in the summer.

Relocation boards would be best for your kind of questions.

That is where gmoney lives! Come spend a month here. I had to come here because of a job in 88 and have been here since. Not really paradise.
