Monaco or Serrano?

My daughter and friend are visiting San Francisco in August. They have narrowed between the two hotels in the Union Square area. Would appreciate any input about the two, safety, city transportation, etc.

Thank You

I've stayed at the Hotel Monaco and it was lovely.
Really enjoy this Kimpton property.

I don't know the Serrano, but the Monaco is wonderful - uniquely decorated rooms (these are NOT your standard Marriott/Westin rooms) and lovely public areas. I understand the breakfast at the Grand Cafe is great, and it's a gorgeous room.

I've stayed at both and prefer the Monaco, although if the Serrano was much less I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

Travelzoo are offering a special deal at the Serrano just now - you need to book by June 8th though;

They are both Kimpton hotels. They are only a block apart but I think the Monaco is a bit better neighborhood. Generally, the Monaco is priced a bit higher. If cost is important, they'll be happy at the Serano.
