Hotels in Nice/Cannes/Monaco
Does anyone have any good recommendations for 4 or 5 star accommodation in Nice, Cannes or Monaco?
We stayed at the Hotel Carlton in Cannes last time we were there and while it was nice, we couldn't afford a seaview room, and found the staff to be rude to their non-high-paying customers and the rooms old and shabby...but we LOVE the Croisette...what a location!
We were considering staying in Nice because we never have, but it doesn't look very nice or exciting. Does anyone have any favorite parts of town in Nice or great locations?
How about Monaco? We love it there, but everything is SO expensive. Anyone have any nice quaint hideaways there?

The Martinez in Cannes is very good; they have just added a new spa. But you might encounter the same problem you did at the Carlton; not always friendly to those who are not multi millionairs. Have you tried Juans-les-Pins; much friendlier, and the Hotel Juana is very good, right in town (with separate beach club). I have been to Nice often, but haven't stayed in any hotels there. It's more a 'real town' compared to Cannes, not totally dependend on tourists. And the beach is not sandy.

Italiano, have you stayed at the Marriott? My husband is a travel agent and we can get a good rate there, so were considering it...
Would prefer to stay in the middle of the action in Cannes or Monaco, but we will have a car, so may not be that inconvenient if the hotel is nice...
Any advice?

Hi benderbabe,
I stayed at the Metropole in Beaulieu sur Mer and loved it. Even though I was in one of the "garden" rooms without a seaview, the staff treated me royally. This is a Relais & Chateaux property. The one drawback is that Beaulieu may be too small for your taste.
I have another hotel on my wish list, the Vista Palace in Roquebrune above Monte Carlo. It looks ideal -- see it at www.vistapalace.com.
Best of luck!

Thanks for the tips Swan!
Had a look at the Vista Palace. Looks nice but not sure we can afford (the husband is a travel agent, and we can get rates at some places which is how we manage to travel so extravagantly, so we'll have to check and see what we can do here!)
Appreciate the advice, in any case.

Yes I have stayed there its a great location and easy trips to nice and Cannes or Eze village there is fraganor perfume factory just a few miles away. just cross the street of the hotel and you are in Monaco. garage parking for your car plus hotel shuttle service to Monte Carol Casino or the Marina .

Hi Benderbabe
I have been having the same problem as you, especially as I want a sea view room!! I have been looking at Columbus Hotel in Monaco as it looks superb for the price. However, they emailed me to say that they charge 45 Euros per person for transfer to a private beach and breakfast is an extra 24 Euros pp. Check out the pics on the average website - it has got the thumbs up from Conde Nast though (www.columbushotels.com)
I'm now looking at La Perouse in Nice which gets so much good press on fodors. The Evening Standard in London ran a fantastic article on Nice last Friday which sold me on the place. Basically, it looks top notch for sightseeing, shopping or for soaking up the sun - whatever you want!! The old part looks lovely and I am interested in some of the museums. I'm a pretty easy going traveller and found Monaco pretty amusing when I was there 2 years ago. However, as I'm going for 3 days, I want to at least have a lot of choices and Nice seems to have it all.

We really liked staying in Nice (after an uncomfortable night in the first hotel we were in )we moved to the Best Western Central right on the boulevard-a side room facing the Negresco Hotel and a view of the water. What a helpful staff to make restaurant reservations for us. Room was sound proofed and probably a 4 star hotel- $480.28 for the 2 nights.

We stayed just outside of Cannes at a lovely resort right on the water in Theoule sur Mer. It's about a 15 minute drive into Cannes from the resort. They have an excellent restaurant and the staff were wonderful. The rooms are VERY large with great bathrooms (marble tubs).

Hi: I am an artist and have gone to Cannes and Nice and the Riviera with my wife every year for the past 3. We stay about 6 weeks each time. We love it.
I would suggest staying in a vacation home rather than a hotel.
For Monaco stay in Cap D'Ail in a beautiful ex-castle called Eden. To find out about it email Ian Scott at [email protected] Use my name (David Schor) and ask him for his website. It is a 2 storey living quarters with kitchen. A beautiful town,
In Cannes, email Harald at : [email protected] Use my name again. He has a number of apartments.
I have painted and painted there. If you want to see my paintings on my website, email me, or go to www.davidschor.com/travel.htm
I look forward to hearing from you.

have stayed in hotel columbus in Monaco and we really loved it. it's a great boutique hotel and food is wonderful. found staff to be helpful and rooms were great. our room overlooked the palace. location feels more quiet and away from tourists. we took taxi to go to the town center.

OK, I'll bite... For about $300/night, you can have a lovely seaview jr. suite at The Westminster Hotel on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. The hotel has been called, "The Poor Man's Negresco," which is an apt description. It has none of the pretense of the Negresco, and much larger rooms for much less money.
The staff couldn't be more gracious, and the location is within about a fifteen minute walk of Vielle Ville, or Old Nice, an area of town that is home to an incredible flower market, excellent seafood restaurants like LE SAFARI, patisseries, bistros, and galleries.
Nice has wonderful museums ( Chagall, in particular) easy access to other towns and villages along the Riveria, a vibrant nightlife, and a welcoming attitude that keeps it from ever feeling dull.
Go there, and have some of the best pizza of your life at Barracuda on Rue Meyerbeer. You won't be sorry!
