Miami of Ohio

My daughter and I will be visiting this Univ. soon. I have researched the Univ. a little but not the town or area.
Can anyone tell me about the town?
How far from nearest large city?
Are there any boutique type hotels in the area to stay while visiting there<
Any Alums or parents who can share their ideas??

It is indeed not a typo. It is a University in Oxford, Ohio. I should have been a little more clearer.
It is one of the original public Ivy schools. It supposedly has one of the most gorgeous campus's as well. that'a about all I know!1

Any avid sports fan is familiar with Miami of Ohio because they have a very competitive Division 1 basketball program, and recently graduated one of the top picks in the NBA draft.

Anne, you probably know the basics about M-o-O. It's located in a college town which is relatively safe. Any closer to Cincinnati and it would be a suburb, so that's a plus--still offers a small, charming, college town experience but not too far removed from the city.

Academic programs are very good (I'm not sure there is such a thing as a "public Ivy League" school since the Ivy League itself didn't even exist until 1945 (the term is barely 60 years old), well over 100 years after schools like Miami-Ohio were founded), the overall atmosphere is VERY conservative and preppy, the Greek system is large and influential, it's not a school for hippie types and tree huggers. It's a very Republican-ish, somewhat one-dimensional student body.
The campus is very pretty.
Bottom line is: if your daughter fits the mold of the typical Miami student and wants a midwestern college town campus experience, this is a very solid choice. Students who are unhappy with their experiences there are typically social outsiders. That is, they don't fit the mold and don't want to conform to it. Our neighbor's daughter just graduated from there last year.

Ted Turner,
Thanks for the reply. Had no idea so close to Cincinatti. I looked on their web site and they claim :
"It is one of the 8 original public Ivy schools." I am not quite sure what that means.
Well, again thanks.

Rule #1. It's not "Miami of Ohio" it is Miami University (that other one is U of Miami!). There are a couple of motels in the Oxford area but even traveling from Cincy for the tour is not cumbersome. It is generally a conservative school with a conservative population, lots of with Greek life, but there are a few tree huggers and Birkenstock wearers there who are very happy! Often referred to as the "Yale of the MidWest" it has a lovely campus and the town is small college town atmosphere where the only business is the university. Good choice of schools and usually near the top with the "best bargains." The "Cradle of Coaches" has produced a laundry list of coaches at all levels! Check with the Admissions Office as they can provide you with lots of information re: your stay. There are some very nice accomodations available right on campus.

I would recommend Ohio University in Athens, Ohio - southeastern Ohio (Rival school to Miami).

It is just as beautiful as Miami - if not more. It is surrounded by the Hocking Hills. It's a very down to earth campus - anyone who has ever graduated from OU continues to feel a close bond to others that have graduated from there.

It is very much a quaint college town with restaurants, coffee houses, boutiques, art galleries, etc. Columbus, Ohio is an hour and half away. Parkersburg, West Virginia is about 45 minutes away.

It is known for its communications school as well as other areas of study that I am less familiar.

Good luck! Go Bobcats!
