I have a friend that's from out if the country and is in Toronto , she wants to meet for a day . We are on the Amtrak line . Any ideas ?

For about $250.00, one of you can fly round-trip to where the other one is. Anything else is not really doable in a day and will cost almost as much if not more.

Train is not an option - NY to Toronto is about 13 hours and I beleive there is only one train a day in each direction. Even if you met halfway somewhere you would still be on the train 9 to 10 hours - even if the schedule worked - which I don;t think it does.

Really flying is the only option.

For a day? Meet at the Rochester Amtrak station. The westbound Maple Leaf arrives in Rochester at 2:04PM when it is on time (sometimes). The Maple Leaf from Toronto is scheduled into ROC at 2:34PM. There are a few things to see and do in Rochester.
Get back to the train station with tickets in hand the next day about 1:30PM.
The round trip for each of you should be less than $150USD.

Yes - but the OP and friend have ONE day - and your plan takes TWO days.

Train to Syracuse and wait for the friend. Get on the Maple Leaf back to New York and have a six hour visit on the train. Have the friend fly back to Toronto from New York.
Only way it works within 24 hours.
