My two cents: Stay two nights in Hana. That way you will have one full day to explore the area, or crash at the hotel.

If I were to go back to Maui I would stay at the Maui Prince because of the beach and the semi-secluded location. The hotel's website has good deals available.

There's not much to do in Hana-if you're looking for high end shopping (but see Hasegawa's General Store, a great diversion). We stayed several days in '92 and have revisited the islands several times. Hana is still my favorite Hawaiian experience. In and around Hana visit: Red Sand Beach, Hamoa Beach, Wai`anapanapa (Black Sand), Venus Pool, Infiniti Pool, Blue Pool, Ohe`o pools, Pipiwai and other trails in and near Haleakala Nat'l Park, countless waterfalls, Lindbergh's grave, Fagan Cross, Hana Pier (and Tutu's) and the Queen's Birthplace in Hana Bay. Jaw-dropping scenery. Be mindful of private property. Enjoy the stillness at night.

I have set up some photos of Maui Kai Unit #402, my personal favorite. If you would like to see them, please send me an e-mail and I'll send you the link.

I agree with Boxer, the Maui Kai was perfect for the two of us. We rented directly from the owner of 402. The unit even had boogy boards, sand chairs and umbrellas. And $130.00 a night can't be beat for ocean front. You may want to check out 402's web site for pictures and other info at www.paradiseinmaui.com.

I agree with Bill. Maui Prince is nice, low-key, and private, nice snorkeling beach. It's south of the lovely Wailea area.

Also there's plenty to do on the hana side of the island, though Hana itself is small, there is plenty to do nearby. We spent 2 wonderful romantic nights in a searanch cottage at the Hotel hana Maui and still ran out of time to see the REd Sand Beach, the Black Sand Beach, and loads of other stuff! There are so many little waterfalls, natural pools, to exlore nearby in both directions from Hana. We had 2 nights there but I wish it had been 3.

We didn't like the Kaanapali area as it's dreadfully over-built, in our opinion. We drove there on a day-trip and were so glad we didn't stay there. One hotel after another all down the beach with no privacy. A sea of lounge chairs just sitting right there by the public walkway. Took us 30 minutes just to find a parking spot.

Wow, just noticed your question is old, posted a while ago, but maybe this answer will help somebody else!

Abert:

We stayed in room 208 in July. I noticed from the pics that your bed is in what is the living room of the 208 room. Did the waves/wind not disturb your sleep?

I tried to sleep on the sleeper sofa, but couldn't due to the fierce night winds.

Our bedroom was straight down the hall, what is there in room 204? If there is no other bedroom, is the bathroom larger?

We enjoyed our room as well! The place is well run! And there are boogie boards in the laundry room for any guest. Our room had the chairs, etc. in the linen closet as well!

Mahalo!

Rocky - You will have a great time no matter where you stay! Here is my two cents worth on our 4th trip to Maui. We are going the last week of March, 2006. There will be two adults and two boys 12 & 14 going for 9 days. We are going on 2 skymile tickets and two tickets purchased from Pleasant Holidays. We booked Kaanapali Shores thru VRBO.com in a one bedroom ocean view for 5 nights and then the last three nights at the Westin! We booked the Westin as a package thru Pleasant Holidays with flight and car. We have stayed at the Sheraton, Alii and Whaler on Kaanapali in the past. Thought we would try to stay longer this time and save $ staying at Kaanapali Shores. Then we could splurge the last three days of vacation and stay at the Westin. It has a great Pool for the boys, no cooking for mom and no driving for dad. We can snorkel, boogie board and relax and not have to pack up the car for the day and drive anywhere for anything. We cant wait! We try to go to Maui every two years. Our boys are growing up so fast and will be off to college in no time! Maui No Ka 'Oi (Maui is the best)

Message: Oldsouthernbelle: I found it best to close the windows at night because I am there in the summer when it is warm. When (and this is rarely) I'm there in the cooler months I love the sound of the waves to sleep with. Not too loud at all on the 4th floor. People buy machines from the Sharper Image to imitate these sounds and this is the real thing!
