You might want to type Maine into your search engine and do a little research before you ask everybody here to answer all your questions.
It is a state, I am sure the prices vary around the state. The weather also. You really should do a little homework on Maine before you try posting again.

In Kittery and Freeport are all of the outlet stores. Freeport has some nice bed and breakfasts. Boothbay Harbor, Camden, Damariscotta, Pemaquid Point, New Harbor, Kennebunkport, Wells, York and Ogunquit are picturesque, but hotels can be pricy during the summer season. Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are also beautiful. Then there's Portland and its Old Town, which is full of boutiques and restaurants. While in Portland, walk along the Eastern Promenade and see the coastline, then walk along the Western Promenade, full of old Victorian homes with views of the White Mountains.
Is Maine pricy? It's all relative, but the coast is expensive during the summer, just like all beach communities. The water is cold in the summer, but bearable in August. You could also visit in the autumn during foliage season, when prices are a bit more favorable.

The coast of Maine is what most people think of when they say Maine. Eating lobster is my favorite attraction. We also enjoy exploring side roads that end up on a point of land. Sometimes it's just an interesting ride, sometimes you find a small dock and an incredible view. Getting out on the water is a lot of fun. You will find a variety of short cruises. We like narrated cruises that focus on nature. Bring binoculars! We also like to attend an event. On the last trip we went to the Scottish Highland Games in Brunswick and a country fair in Union. In August we usually have perfect weather. In the midcoast area you will find lots of little roadside stands selling wild blueberries. The lobster places will have fresh native corn. I think prices in the whole northeast are more expensive than other parts of the country. The other option is to go before or after summer so hotel rates will be a lot lower. And yes, there are some incredibly beautiful places in Maine.

For a Mom and daughter trip, stay in Ogunquit. Along the beaches and into Perkins Cove is more pricey; along Rt. 1 is more reasonable. Check out the Spar Hawk Inn/Hotel. Perkins Cove is extrememly picturesque, and has a lovely Cliff Walk connecting to the "downtown" shopping area. Great Lobster Pound in Ogunquit, or go to Foster's DownEast Clambake in York, Maine. The outlet stores of Kittery, Maine are right next door, and there are many antique stores along Rt. 1. Ogunquit is halfway between Kennebunkport, Maine and Portsmouth, NH, both of which make excellent day trips. Destinations further out include Rye Beach (NH) and the Fuller Garders on Rt. 1A and Portland, Maine for a more of a "city."

For me the best time to travel in Maine is after Labor Day and into the 1st or 2nd week of October. Unless your interests are in hunting, fishing, camping or other woods type leisure stick to the coast, or DOWNEAST as it's refered to. Meandering along Rt 1 can be beautiful, take side trips down back roads to the water. Freeport is one of the best outlet type of towns anywhere, if your into shopping. Camden is a great place to hole up for a day or 2, The roads down to Pemaquid point can be scenic and fun. Mt Desert island is a great destination, very scenic, adventurous, and historic. A 5-7 day slow ride from Kittery to Bar Harbour and back in the fall with good weather could be one of the best vacation of your life.

As a lifelong resident of this beautiful state, I love the coast but know there is more to Maine than the rocky shore. We have inland mountains and lakes regions that are equally beautiful. Rangeley and Moosehead lakes are stunning areas, well worth visiting. Moosehead area has a number of very nice B&B's as does Rangeley. Baxter State Park is a gem and houses Mt. Katahdin, the state's highest peak. A trip with a 5-7 day itinerary could incorporate the best of Maine. In my opinion, Maine is one of the most picturesque places you will ever visit. Expense is relative. Winters can be cold while Spring is usually very short. I love all the seasons but most tourists prefer Summer and Fall for obvious reasons. Fall offers our world famous foliage and just driving in a car gives one the opportunity to see all the spectacular colors Visit the state's website at www.state.me.us, to find out more. If you go to www.Boston.com right now (today), there is on the "front page," a section on Maine which would be a good starting point for more research; and the photos aren't bad either.

To Michael Corleone: Your statement about a trip incorporating all the best elements of Maine has intrigued me. If you had six nights to spend, and you were flying into Portland and leaving out of Portland, what towns would you stay over in to see the "best of Maine" in fall foliage season? Thanks.
