Maine cottage
Wanted: small cottage with kitchen on lake or coast for couple. Couple in early 50's, nightlife not an interest, love walking, reading and good dining. Priority is romance and relaxation.
Any suggestions?

I have found rentals in several locations from vrbo and also by googling "vacation rentals" in the area of interest. We have rented for years in several locations in the US, Europe and Mexico and have never had the slightest problem. The properties have always been as described and pictured on the sites and the owners have always been great.

I've been wracking my brain trying to help you...just to return your kindness to me with my Bermuda trip.
What month are you thinking about ?
There are many beautiful lake cottages available, but good dining may disappoint.
Coastal cottages would offer better access to good dining. The areas that you might think about are Ogunquit/Kennebunkport in southern Maine, Camden in the midcoast region of the state and the Bar Harbor area, a little further north.
I think the Bar Harbor area might be what you're looking for as Acadia National Park is there with lots of hiking and biking trails, and of course Cadillac Mountain.
It was my "neck of the woods" when growing up, but I've not been back for years. Try a search here for more current info.
If you come in September/October your rental options will be better and it is the most beautiful time of the year in Maine.
Let me know which direction seems best for you and I'll happily do some research for you !

How kind, Marion. Thank you.
The couple is my brother and his girlfriend. He lives in NC and she lives in NYC so they will probably meet in Portland and drive from there. The month of travel is August (she is a teacher and wants to go before returning to school).
Don't do any research on our account, but if something springs to mind, please let me know.
I hope your recovery continues. It is always nice to see you on the boards.

hi, i'd like to suggest the moosehead lake region. lots of b&b's and cabins for rent. on vrbo look at greenville and rockwood. or just google greenville lodging. bangor would be the airport of choice to visit either bar harbor or greenville. each town is approx 2 hrs from bangor.
further south they might look around sebago lake.
in any event its getting late to find places in maine in aug. so they should work soon if possible.

i read about this place in the recent issue of renovation style. it looks really cute. a group of small cottages in kennebunkport that have been completely renovated. it is run similar to a b&b but you have your own small cottage with kitchen. breakfast baskets are left on your patio in the mornings.

Hi cmcfong,
Here's a link to addorable cottages on the dunes in Ogunquit. We stayed there ages ago and loved the ambiance, views and the ability to walk to town and the beach - when the tides out you can get to the beach and walk for miles. This is where Ed harris went to in Empire Falls.
Ask for a water front cottage.
My mom lives down the street so if interested, I'll give you more area info.
