Thanks so much to all--Lajitas is exactly what I had in mind...unfortunately, it looks like it would be easier to go anywhere in Mexico (645 miles away according to the website or a 245 mile drive from the closest commercial airport in Midland).

SOMEONE MENTIONED THE FLYING L IN BANDERA,MY HUSBAND AND I LOVE IT AND IT IS ONLY 30 MINUTES FROM ,KERRVILLE , BOERNE OR 45MINUTES TO SAN ANTONIO

I haven't stayed here, but we looked into it last fall (didn't take the trip afterall) and they were very nice on the phone. It looks luxurious and romantic-and its not very far from Houston.

The Spa at Lake Austin is another good choice.

Lajitas...I was new years eve 98/99. It had yet to be bought and revamped. (yes, someone bought the town for about $4Million) It's near the entrance to Big Bend National park. Back then it was a party town. The mayor was a goat. Really.
