Luxury NYC hotel with 2 kids in Aug.?

Can anyone suggest a good NYC hotel for 2 adults, 2 kids in $300 range- less than that would be preferred? We would like a luxury type, Planned activities are Statue of Liberty, Musuem of Nat. History, Central Park, American Girl Store, Today Show-Rockefeller Center. So far I've found good reviews on Omni Bershire, Parker Meridian, Affinia hotels, Benjamin, but no great deals. We will be there either Aug. 6-8 or Aug. 20-22.

I don't know if you'll get a "great deal" on a luxury type hotel, even in August. The average room rate for Manhattan hotels is well over $200.

I think all of the hotels you've mentioned are good ones. I happen to like the Omni Berkshire.

You will not find luxury for under $300/night in NYC. Even in August. Do a search on this board, I've seen several people post about good deals they've found on hotels in August.

I agree - $300 in NYC MIGHT get you a budget hotel. Think more alaong the lines of $400-$500 for mid-range properties and $600+ for luxury. The only "low season" might be the later part of January.

Can you please rank your priorities? Location? Luxury? Price?

Forget luxury, go with one of the Affina.com all suite hotels.

I think a one bedroom in the Shelburne Murray Hill would work well.

The Surray would be a good choice also (another Affina hotel) but it may be more than $300.

Go to www.travelzoo.com for some good deals on hotels in New York. I've booked the Beekman Tower and the Marriot Marquis (neither considered luxury but comfortable hotels) for $199. for four not including taxes.

Luxury hotels in NYC are not $300 per night. You can get something pleasant for that price - but luxury is in the $500-$600 range at least - even in August. And keep in mind tht many hotel rooms in NYC are for 2 people only - one large or 2 twin beds - and cannot accommodate 4.

With 2 kids I would go for one of the Affinia all suite hotels which get generaly good reviews. They give you extra room and most have small kitchen facilities so you can keep drinks and snacks in the room for the kids. They are showing some availability starting from about $250 per night in a one bedroom suite. You might also want to check the Embassy suites.

If you prefer you could try Priceline - but you would have to bid on 2 rooms (not always easy to get) since each room is guaranteed for only 2 people. Check biddingfortavel.com or betterbidding.com to see what prices they are getting for 5* hotels.

FYI -

Have checked a couple of random dates in August and the best prices showing for a sample luxury hotels (Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons etc) for rooms for 4 are about $650 per night - with tax it's over $760 per night - and that's for one room - not a suite.

I just got a rate of $229/night(w/out tax)for a deluxe with 2 doubles at the Omni Bershire. Its a weekend special. Is this a nice hotel? By nice I mean marble or granite bath, good bed linens, desk or seating area in room, tasteful decor. It also looks to be centrally located and somewhat near American Girl Store.

I've never stayed at the Omni Berkshire, but the picture looks nice. A couple of nights with two small kids shouldn't be that bad.

Did you see their "summer splash" package? I don't know what that extra $30 per person means -- hope not for each child.

you may be able to find something @ www.tug2.net Look under Timeshares for Sale/Rent. They mention The Manhattan Club....maybe soemone in NYC can comment on that property.

Also found the Benjamin has 1 bed suite for $319/night weekend. Is this a nicer hotel than the Omni?

We stayed at Affinia's Benjamin Hotel in April. It was a suite. It was elegant and just perfect for a family.

The Omni Berkshire is a very lovely hotel -- not too big and they do most of their business as a sleeping, rather than convention, hotel. I recommend it a lot. However, with 2 kids, I think I'd go with either the Benjamin or the Kimberly, which have suites. You'll just have more room.

I always check Kayak.com 1st...generally great hotel rates. The rates for later August are better. The Omni Berkshire is coming up $569 for both dates; but on the Omni site itself it is $349. Other Options: W Hotel NY-The Court: $269, W Hotel Times Square: $287, Waldorf Astoria: $398, The NY Helmsley: $244

Also, check Sidestep.
