TNNC -

The omni is a pleasant hotel but I would not call it luxury - and I definitely would not do it with 2 kids. The bath does have marble and there is one comfy chair - but the rooms are not large. Not so bad for adults that will be out all the time - but with 2 kids you'll be falling all over each other all the time (the 2 beds will take up most of the floor space). (If you're thinking of the rooms you get outside NYC - with a seating area with sofa, coffee table and comfy chairs - here those are called suites. You won;t get that in any regular room - except a luxuty hotel.)

If you want to stay there I think you would have to get a suite to have a resonable amount of space and not fall over each other.

Still think a suite hotel isyour best bet - I would rather do without a marble bath than deal with squashed, whiny kids.

As for the W hotels - they are famous for small rooms. Definitely would not do with 2 kids - even if they can actually fit them in the rooms.

I've done a fair bit of traveling with kids and I recommend you find the largest accommodations you can within your budget. Four people in a regular hotel room is a disaster waiting to happen.

Surprised no one's mentioned quikbook.com ---usually great prices that don't require prepayment. There are a number of suites within your budget. The Affinia Gardens is the most recently renovated of the Affinia hotels and has a 1 bedroom suite with 2 queen beds. It's not as central as the Benjamin, but more recently renovated. The Affinia 50 is also excellent with kids.

There are also some deals on travelzoo that would be good for you. The Intercontinental Barclay for $189 for summer weekends, the Beekman Tower (another Affinia hotel near the UN) for $199 for a 1 bedroom suite, or a suite at Morgan's including breakfast for $269

This is a great thread.

"I want only the finest hotel during peak season and I am willing to pay up to 50% of the market rate for it!"

There are many deals available for $300.00 budget.
Try Quikbook.com, travelzoo.com.

Check out the Grand Hyatt online as well.
This is the online rate for August 2006.

Not sure if Grand Hyatt is luxury enough for you though ; )

Did you price the Doubletree in Time's Square? It's nice to have a two rooom suite with kids and a refrigerator. They'd have a pull out in the LR and their own TV (watch for porn on the master bedroom TV though).

Many hotel rooms in NYC are very small even in so-called luxury hotels. So find a suite.

tnnc,
I just completed lots of research for my husband and daughter (8) who are going this weekend. I wanted a nice hotel in a decent location- not sure of the age of your kids, if they will walk a lot or if they can share a bed, but I picked the Sofitel- got a deluxe (one step up from Premier- only diff is floor level) and they have 2 queen beds. Not a suite, but very classy hotel with great reviews on tripadvisor, and top notch service. Right now, if you get a lower floor, you can get ave. rate of 239 on hotels.com. We stay at 4 and 5 star hotels, and this one fits the bill.

We just stayed at Doubletree Suites on Times Square--not luxury, but clean and secure and great with kids. Also, check out the Manhattan Club. You can get great deals there on suites and they have beautiful accomodations. They are a timeshare, but also rent out rooms as a hotel when they have availability. www.manhattanclub.com
