Lovely Winter

Well our winter storm started sooner then anticipated and looks like there will be more snow than thought. Now looks like up to 12" in the City and up to 16/18 " inches on LI.

And the snow is very light - so it looks like there will be a lot of drifts and blowing snow.

And just for extra fun the wind chills in NYC will be about minus 10 degrees tonight - farenheit, not centigrade.

Lots of delayed flights but no thought of closing airports (but the heaviest of the storm - 1" to 2" per hour are expected tonight). Subways will run and buses can handle up to about 6 to 7" without any trouble. After that - it gets tricky.

Sanitation dep't is currently sanding but it looks like they will have to start plowing soon. As usual in a big storm they work 12 hours on and 12 hours off. Since the equipment is heavy duty (full size Mercedes garbage trucks with large plows attached) they can usually handle up to about 15" of snow - after that they have to do double plowing (two pair of staggered plows on broader avenues).

Outside my window only looks like about 3" so far - but snowing to beat the band.

Do not expect to fly into or out of NYC until tomorrow night. And do check with your ailrines for any flights in the NE (Philly has 6" and counting).
