Exactly. Unless this is just a day trip back and forth to the airport - or are staying with people who will drive you or lend you their car - you really can;t get around LI without a car.
(The Long Island Railroad goes back and forth to the City more or less efficiently - but other than that public transit is dismal - ie buses that go very few places once every 40 minutes or so.)

Actually, nytraveler brings up the point that you could get to Nassau County from JFK on the LIRR. You'd take the AirTrain to Jamaica Queens (short ride in the wrong direction) and there catch a train to whatever town is nearest your destination. From LGA, you'd need a taxi from the airport to Jamaica station.

Carmel Car service will drive you out to LI 212 666-6666.They are generally less money than the LI services.We live on LI and use them all the time.If you have luggage the LI railroad as we say in NY is a schlep and then you need to take a taxi to where you are going.Treat yoursel to a taxi.
