Logistics from Penn Station to UES
Hoping for solution from you all: Going to City on Wednesday with oldest granddaughter & her friend, both 14; they must get their luggage over to the Renaissance Hotel on E 57th first where friend's Dad is staying; he then will take his daughter out for the day, and we're heading downtown on the 4-5-6 line with our granddaughter. She's never been in NYC so he wants to do the "top tier of tourist spots", our gal's been to those few times. Rather than taxi/uber from Penn Station to his hotel (cross town usually a bear), is there a spot we can meet at Penn Station so he can grab luggage for both girls and take his daughter as he pleases? At the end of our day on Wednesday, we still have to get our GD back to the hotel anyway, but would rather "share" the taxi time. Girls are overnight out at our house tonite and tomorrow nite, then he is travelling with them to Richmond on Thursday. (Girls have been out east for Lacrosse & Soccer camps before returning home to CA on the weekend!) Don't believe there is luggage storage at Penn, we're coming across Hudson from Jersey not on Amtrak. Guess I'm being a crotchety grandma in the middle of a hot week.....

There is luggage storage at Penn Station for Amtrak customers only.
Are you familiar with Penn Station? I ask because if you are unfamiliar with Penn Station it can be tricky to suggest a meeting location. There are two levels and staircases from all arrival platforms to both levels--no guarantees which staircase the you will use to leave the train platform.
Invariably, even when I say a very specific location ("Meet me at the LIRR information booth" -- there is only one LIRR info booth and it is on the lower level), people end up at another similar location (the NJ Transit information booth on the upper level). Since you are coming on NJ Transit, you could meet by the NJ Transit info booth, but you may come up a staircase to the LIRR level and have go up a level to find it. With mobile phones you should be able to find one another.
You might leave Penn Station, going outside above the station to the Pennsy Food Hall (2 Pennsylvania Plaza, set back from the street at 7th Ave and 33rd St) and meet just inside the doors.
Without the luggage, you might choose one of the subway lines (A-C-E or 1-2-3) from Penn Station to your destination downtown. Or walk just a block to Herald Square/6th Ave/34th St to take the R-N-Q-W all the way downtown, or downtown to Union Square and then transfer to the 4-5-6 line. Depends on your destination
