There are much better luaus on the Big Island. My two favorites are held at Kona Village and the Mauna Kea -- they're both smaller and more intimate, and the food is better.
Commercial luaus are painfully touristy, you may wish to spare your kids. Average age of the audience at these things is somewhere between 50 and death. ;-)

We went to the Kona Village luau in March with our kids, (13 and 16 at the time.) We had a blast but we knew it would be incredibly touristy, and it was. I'd say the average age was between 70 and death. It was still fun, or funny, really. My husband and son ate so much food! I can't remember where we got the 2 for 1 coupons but look for deals. I don't think there's any need to pay full price for these things.
