Leaving to Europe Backpacking trip tomorrow, any last minute advice?
Hi guys,
thanks for all your help. Without Fodor, I didn't think it was possible for me to plan a trip for meself and me friends. Will be travelling to Moscow, then flying off to Berlin - Brussels - Amsterdam - Luzerne - Montreux - Geneva - Rome - Pompeii and Sorrento - Florence and Pisa - Venice - Salzburg - Vienna - Stuttgart - Moscow.
It's gonna be great, I can tell.
Any last minute advices? Eg what to pack, what not to pack, what to do, what not to do?
See you next month!

Wrong forum, but I've done this so I'm happy to help...
To Pack:
-Extra copies of all documentation
-Small detergent packet for washing clothes
-Retractable clothes line for drying clothes
-Compression packs (can get at REI) to maximize space (and use as a wet bag)
-REI also sells black mesh bags in all sizes - perfect for toiletries, batteries, dirty clothes, etc
-Money belt
-Tear out (or copy) sections of guide books so you can throw them away as you go
-Shoes besides tennis shoes (2 pairs of shoes)!
-Fold-up poncho (also at REI) big enough to cover you AND your backpack
-Tiny mess kit (REI again - I should be a spokesman) for meals on trains
-We also took a tiny corkscrew
-Bath wipes (any drugstore) for overnight train travel
-Blister pads for your feet
-Make sure you take Pepto Bismol (pill form) for sickness
Good luck!

One other note - we also packed old clothes - nothing new, so that when something became stained, we didn'y mind throwing it away. Also makes room in your pack for anything extra you might want to bring home!
I think I ended up coming home with the clothes on my back, one pair of pants, and a lot of goodies!
Hope this helps!

Ooops - 2 more things:
-Tiny pad of paper & pen to serve as travel journal / picture log / accounting record (trust me, you'll need this one)
-A paperback you don't mind throwing away to read on trains (then go to the English section of any bookstore for a replacement)

My husband and I hikes all over Switzerland last year with nothing but backpaks and a small carryon. We wore hiking pants and shirts and washed them out every couple days. We had our carryon luggage transferred to the hotels in advance in some places. (you can do this easily from train stations in Swtizerland) Also, make sure your hiking shoes are waterproof! Pack as light as you can, use miniature size tolietries and buy anything else you need there.
