I have this theory that if you tip housekeeping staff well, your stay will be much more pleasant. I plan on leaving $10 each morning ($5 for myself and $5 for my spouse). I know this seems extraordinary, but I *know* what a horrible chore it is to clean the shower of someone who is in their mid 40's and losing their hair (luv u baby ), and I think that---- in and of itself ----deserves a big tip...

I know its their job and blah blah blah, but really, the $10/day is not gonna break the bank for us and I think it will mean something special to the housekeeping staff...

Well - I am glad I asked this question! I should have headed it 'etiquette for Las Vegas' I have printed off the thread to read and inwardly digest at leisure! I have now asked another Las Vegas question and am hoping for lots of replies! Many thanks again for all these efforts! Hilary

I haven't "self-parked" in Vegas for years. It is so easy to casino hop using valets. For all this time I have stuck with a three dollar tip at pick-up. These guys run around in that terrible heat ( and I do mean run ) and I think they deserve a nice tip. Compared to what I drop in the casinos, it's a small bit of money.

Drat it happytrails,

I had to look up "penurious." Good luck in trying to ejukate me.

In that context I have stuck to much simpler words, like: "parsimonious", which are quite good when used in cookies and served with milk!

Thanks, I'll keep that tip in mind the next time I bake up a batch of cookies. (I hope my replay is suitably punctilious.)

It would mean something special to me to receive a $10 tip for doing my job for 10 minutes.

Here are a couple more terms that I heard used in Vegas recently:

A "quarter" is a green casino chip that is worth $25.

A 25-cent piece left as a tip is called "chump change".

logandog, valet parking is great if you aren't in a hurry. I've waited close to an hour to get our car from valet in Las Vegas. And recently we walked out those doors at Caesars in the middle of what seemed like a revolution going on. It was scores of people really upset about how long they had been waiting for their cars. At peak hours, many of those hotels and casinos (especially at the time of major shows) can't handle the volume of cars in valet.

One more question - are you driving into Vegas from elsewhere? Unless you are, or unless you plan on taking side trips outside of Vegas while you are there, that's the only reason for even having a car. Driving around Vegas, especially on the strip, is not any fun at all. In my opinion, driving between casinos is a waste of time, even from the strip to downtown. If you are staying at the Flamingo, you are on the best corner on the strip. You can easily amuse yourselves for 2-3 days just walking around that area, taking the new double decker buses ($5 for a 24 hour pass) up and down the strip, or taking a cab.

I agree with the last poster, unless you have a real need for a car or just love traffic you really do not need one on the strip. You can easily walk or take the bus along the Strip and not have to worry about parking garages and the long walk from them to the hotel(s). Flamingo has a great central location, you can walk either way from there. When we are in Vegas we rent a car for a day or two at the hotel (Dollar has desks in most of the major hotels by the way) so that we can go "out and about" away from the strip, but on the strip we walk. (Funny thing is we have lived in Southern CA and in AZ and no one walks much in either place, it's a auto oriented life , but when in Vegas we walk)
