tipping in Vegas?
Going to Vegas for 1st time-I always get confused about tipping. Who do I have to tip and how much-the person who opens the taxi door, the one who takes bag to front desk, the one who takes bag to the room & how much is appropriate for these services? Also if the concierge gets show tickets or dinner reservation, what is an appropriate tip?

thanks, happytrails-I followed your advice and googled. My problem is when to tip bellboys. This is my conclusion:
doorman-no tip if he just opens the car door-tip if he gets you a cab
bellmen-tip the one who carries your bag to your room. It is not necessary if bellman carries bag to desk and disappears.
Do you agree with this?

ita - I'm not connected with any hotel and I don't work for tips. However, in Vegas and elsewhere, I find that modest, consistent tipping leads to good service and that staff remember me and go out of their way to be helpful even in non-tipping situations. If a bellman carries my bags to the check-in line/desk, I tip them $0.50 - $1 per bag, depending on the size of the bags and distance & convenience for me. If they check in my bags for storage because it's too early to check in, I tip them the same amount. Likewise, I tip whoever takes my bags up to my room, usually $1 per bag. Loading the bags into a car or taxi, $1 per bag. Tipping the conceriege - for me it depends on how much they've done. If they've spent time on the phone lining up transportation and tickets, I try to tip according to the time I'm guessing they spent and how difficult my request was. I don't use the concierge for this type of service in the US, but have done so in Europe, where I need help, anywhere from $5 - $20 depending on what they've done. Doormen - if I'm the one asking for the cab, I tip them a dollar. You haven't asked about cocktail waitresses on the casino floor, but I see alot of people order drinks without tipping them. I think they work hard & deserve a tip for fetching my free drink. I give them a dollar for every drink. I find they check back with me much more frequently. BTW - I don't tip if the service is bad or surly, or I reduce it to a token that conveys the same message. Good luck & have a great time!

Hi ita,
Usually bellman ask, "Do you need help with your bags." If you say yes, you should tip no matter how little service they provide. I usually say no thanks because I travel very light.
However, a bellman can be helpful if he takes you to your room. Before tipping him you can ask him any questions you have about the room. You can check to see if there are enough towels, or whatever else you require. And, most important, if you don't like the room, you can ask him to get you moved. In this case a bellboy is worth a good tip.
I never use a concierge to make reservations because I find they usually can't do better than I can do on my own.
The right tip is the one that feels right to you--about $1 a bag for bellmen. Anybody who indicates that a tip is insufficient is a jerk and should be reported to management.
