Lake Powell / Is it worth staying there?

What is there to do in Lake Powell and how long should I stay? I am planning a week in Arizona and thought that Lake Powell and Page look like a fun time. Is this an area I should do as a day trip? Should I plan to stay in this area and make it the center base while I do the canyons? I will basically have 6 nights and will be flying into Phoenix and Leaving from there. So for my trip I want to split some time up north and then spend my last 3 nights in the Phoenix area. Is this smart? Does anyone know anything about the Sheraton San Marcos Golf Resort? Thank you for your help.

We found an overnight stay at the lake was adequate. It allowed us to easily make an 8 am boat trip to Rainbow Bridge, which is beautiful and impressive. It took 5-6 hours, I believe. We ordered a bag lunch in advance from Wahweap Lodge, where they leave, so we could continue our road trip right after we landed. They also have trips to Antelope Canyon which we did not do.

While it depends on what you're personally looking for on a vacation, IMHO, one night or even part of one day is sufficient. While the aqua water against the red rock IS STUNNING, there are so many other areas of Arizona that should also be explored. Again, this is JMHO, but unless you're renting one of their houseboats for some R and R, I would suggest seeing it, then moving on.

we stayed there 3 nights, right at the marina, and could have done more. One day we did the rainbow bridge boat ride and really enjoyed it, the next, we did a white water raft, the last day we rented a boat and spent the whole day on the water, going in and out of all the coves, stopping at little beaches along the way, swimming etc. It was great. A wonderful family vacation that included a few days in Sedona and two days at the North Rim as well.

There is the smooth float down the colorado also.

The Page Museum offers a (I hate to say) lunch-dinner/show. You can tour an indian village, eat and enjoy educational information and dance. I've not done this yet but sounds nice for the evening.

has anyone seen antelope canyon - it does sound really neat!

Antelope Canyon is sureal. It is an awesome expierence and one of the hightlights of our trip. The drive out to the site takes about 20 minutes, then you have about 50 minutes in the canyon. Try to be there around 12 noon, for maximum Light Streams. I wish I could post my photos. It is only 3 miles outside of Page Arizonia.

We spent over two weeks in Sedona, Lake Powell and the parks. Antelope Canyon was by far the highlight of our trip. We saw it in the morning. There are photographers who spend the entire day there to catch it in different lights. If you can, go see it. I know the word awesome is thrown around a lot these days, but this is truly awesome!
