Lake Placid Hotels and trains

Hi - We were thinking of going to lake placid in early dec for a week. 2 adults. Can anyone recommend a hotel or condo that has a wood burning fireplace? And close to walk to activites since we will not have a car.

Thinking of taking the train from Penn. Any train info would be appreciated also. Thanks.

Are you talking about New York Penn Station? Have you looked at www.amtrak.com?

Mirror Lake Inn is wonderful and great location. Have stayed there twice and it was better each time! Perfect location, excellent spa and restaurant and rooms with fireplaces.

Thanks. I just called Mirror Lake and they only have gas fireplaces. Any other suggestions?

Just one note - the trip from Penn Station to Lake Placid is more than 7 hours - first a 6 hour train ride, then an hour on the bus to Lake Placid. Have only been there with a car - and think getting around without one would be a PIA.
