Lake Placid/Best Place to Stay w Small Kids?

Going to Lake Placid for first time. Any suggestions? Hotels? Restaurants?

admanniv, I will try to help you but you need to do something first. Try to google on Lake Placid lodging, read descriptions, chose at least a couple places that would suit your requirements, then ask specific questions. If you are talking about Lake Placid, NY (not Lake Placid, FL) then time of the year is important. Small kids? Ages? Would they share a room with you? How many kids? How many people all together? Your interests? Your budget? For how long? Are you thinking about motels, hotels, small inns, lodges, cabins, B&Bs? If you do topic search here on this forum you will find posts about lodging and dining too. But please ask specific questions and those of us who live here or know this area will be more than happy to help.
Meanwhile check out The Point in Saranac Lake

Pat2003 - Thanks so much for your msg. I very much appreciate your offer to help.

My husband and I are thinking of going to Lake Placid (NY) in the next month or so - during ski season - for a long weekend (perhaps during President's Day weekend 2/17,18,19 - if possible). We have a 5 yr old and 5 month old baby (both boys) - just the 4 of us. The 5 yr old has never been skiing so we'd like to give him a good first experience - good ski school, easy conditions, etc. He also likes ice skating and would probably love a horse or dog sleigh ride, many outdoor winter activities, etc. Adirondack Train could be fun? An indoor pool would be a hit.

My husband and I will take turns w the baby so we'd like to have some things nearby where we could take him and not be bored ourselves - stroll around, shops, etc. Would be nice to be close to restaurants so we don't have too far to go w the stroller - otherwise we could certainly drive (we'll have our car) but thought it would be nice not to have to take it everywhere.

I actuallly have Googled Lake Placid lodging and am aware of many of the offerings, but since I haven't been there I was hoping to get some "inside information" from people that know the area. I'm thinking a hotel would be best for us since it would have many amenities but I suppose a lodge or cabin/house would also work as long as it is very centrally located and getting a stroller around wouldn't be a problem. I figured B&B's and small inns would be better when baby is sleeping through the night consistently.

Regarding hotels, Hilton seems nice, but not sure of location. Best Western seems like good location, but it's booked. Northwoods Inn seems like good location but doesn't sound so nice. Crowne Plaza location seems OK but read some bad reviews about service, etc.

Regarding budget I'd say up to about $300 per night. If it's a spectacular place perhaps we'd go alittle higher. The Pointe sounds amazing but I didn't think it would be appropriate for little children.

Any inside info would be great! Also would love to hear family friendly restaurant recommendations . Thanks so much for your help!

The Hilton is a great location. It's right on Main St. providing easy access to shops and restaurants. My recommendation was going to be the Best Western but since they are booked my next choice would be the Hilton.

Agree, if you can get a room for a holiday weekend in Lake Placid at the Hilton take it. It would be my next choice after the Best Western. Great location for walking to restaurants/shops in town. (My first choice over the Best Western would be the Mirror Lake Inn; very pricey, but very nice and OK for families. However, I doubt that you'll get a weekend room there at this point.)

The Best Western has dog sledding right behind the lodge on the lake. You don't have to be staying there to go for a ride. Just down from that is an ice slide...also really fun. You can ice skate at the speed skating oval.

We also stayed at the Best Western and liked it, especailly the location. If your 5 year old is not in school, I'd go for a different weekend than Pres. wkd. This time we rented a house..there are 20 of us...but being President's week, we had to rent for a full week even though we can only stay 4 nights.

Great advice! I now have a room reserved at the Hilton. Glad to know the dog sledding and ice slide are nearby. My son will love those! I hadn't been too excited about this trip (native Floridian - don't love the cold), but now I'm really looking forward to it! Thanks everyone! (p.s. - I welcome any additional advice.)
