Lake Geneva or New Buffalo, Il?

Can any of you compare Lake Geneva to New Buffalo? We really want to visit a lake town near Chicago, bike ride, canoe or shop

New Buffalo actually is in Michigan. It's an easy drive from Chicago and is a sleepy kind of place (in a good way). There are quaint places to stay, fun casual restaurants and some shopping. Has a sort of laid back, artsy vibe. The lake is Lake Michigan - huge lake! There are some sandy beaches.

I've only been to Lake Geneva a couple of times (not at all recently) - it's in Wisconsin. Also easy drive from Chicago. The lake is much, much smaller, but still a decent size lake. The town is bigger than New Buffalo. My impression is that it is more touristy than New Buffalo, but someone who's been there more recently could tell you more. You might also want to post under Wisconsin.
