La Madeleine bakery is great!

I don't know why Fodor's has missed this spot, but La Madelein (547 St Ann Street)became our sure bet for good, inexpensive food in the French Quarter. The soups and salads were always good and the sweets were delicious.

It's a mall restaurant in Phoenix, I know. Same one? (Scottsdale Fashion Square)

Yeah, it's a chain based in Dallas. Don't be fooled into thinking it's some authentic bistro or anything. It ranges from good to crappy depending on location.

I eat breakfast there every day when I'm in New Orleans. I always try to get one of the tables overlooking the square.

There's one in Dallas, too, near SMU.

The chain was founded by an authentic Frenchman and I think his restaurants reflect that. I liked to use them in Houston when I lived there. The bakery products are like France and provided me with great bread to go with the onion soup for lunches.

And the one in Georgetown is worth a hike . . . great place to wander for an early-morning treat. There's also one in the hinterlands of Atlanta . . . critics aside, I think the food's as nearly French as any similarly priced place around - proving that chains aren't necessarily a bad thing!

Ace Place,

We may have been neighbors. I lived about two blocks north of La Madeleine on Fondren and could smell the bread baking. Heaven! Does that interesting man (I think he's from Jamaica) still hang out there?

They sell some of their bakery products at the Sam's Clubs in Dallas.

I noticed La Madeleine while in Houston and from seeing posts about it in Fodors decieded to stop in. Nice ambiance, good bakery items, looks like a great place to have more of. I brought home some muffins and scones and they were good. but my kids were suprised to see all the blueberries. I don't think many bakeries use the real thing..decent prices too. Wish someone would open on in south Miami area.

La Madeline's is good for what it is. A better than average chain that leans toward french style food. I was disappointed in their eclairs though. I have found the best eclairs to be at Haydel's Bakery on Jefferson Highway. Their filling if creamier and the eclair itself is not tough.

We were in NO FQ in late August, and we picked up some food from there to go. We had an evening flight and needed some dinner on the go, it worked out great!

I'm in Dallas and have been a La Mad fan for years. Their Strawberries Romanoff is absolutely fabulous!

... very tired food. The standards have slipped badly in the past ten years. My most recent foray into one was in a very well off section of a major city - with access to the right clientelle. I mistakenly believed it might be different, being in the top location. Wrong. Still it was terrible food. You can do much better at a bistro.
