Zion NP of course, and Pipe Spring National Monument is also very interesting. Pipe Spring is west of Fredonia on route 389, about a ten minute ride.
Watch for the unmarked police car in Fredonia, a Crowne Vic. I think it was grey, maybe light blue. Parks on the shoulder as far off the road as possible. We saw tickets being given on three occasions to cars entering and leaving town last October.

The drive is very scenic and it depends on your interests. Frankly there is not a lot of traditional "must sees" on this trip. There is the checkered mesa near bryce (at least I think thats the name), lots of red rock mesas and the shop in Jacobs lake has homemade cookies that should not be missed.

I agree that Zion should not be missed. The kids would really enjoy hiking part of the Narrows. This is a hike in canyon that is ankle to knee deep in water. I think it is a total of seven miles but you can walk as far as you want and then turn around. The canyon walls are hundreds of feet tall and are not far apart. Henceforth, the name "Narrows"

I'm pretty sure brooklandsbuttercup has Zion in her plans, but if she don't, then it is a must see.
On the way from the N. Rim to Bryce you will travel though Kanab, Utah which is a nice little town. There's an old western section that's kind of a tourist place. On Hwy 12 you will travel thought Red Canyon which is interesting but nothing compared to Bryce.
Here is a great website to explore things to do in Southern Utah:

Thank you all.
Yes, we are going to Zion; you are right, Utahtea!!
Ronkala: Thanks for the tip re the police car!
Does anyone know the name of the shop with the cookies in Jacob's Lake? A couple of people have mentioned it so the cookies must be good, and our kids will like a "sweet" stop.
We are thinking of stopping in Kanab at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary if any of you have heard of it.
THANKS!
