Key Largo or Islamorada?
Need help! Need to decide on spending 2 - 3 nights in Key Largo or Islamorada in May (before heading into Key West). We love anything to do with water (snorkeling, jet skiing, swimming, etc) and also love to eat/drink (a lot!). So where would we be better off spending our time?? Help!

I like Islamorada a lot more than any of the other keys including Key West but having said that, Islamorada can be very boring.
Staying in Islamorada is either about vegging or getting out over the water.
Are you boaters? Can you read nav charts and channel markers? If so, rent a boat for a couple of days and hire a captain for an hour or so to show you the lay of the land.
You'll see some amazing things.
On land, we like feeding the tarpon at Robbies, the Lorelei, The World Wide Fisherman (Bass Pro Shop).
Fair warning, middle keys people really frown on jetskis. They are horrible for the environment and the keys are all about the environment.
Kids or no?
Kids, Cheeca Lodge, Pines and Palms.
No kids, Casa Morada, The Moorings.

We stayed at the Lime Tree Bay in Islamorada in September, beautiful place, upgrade to the better rooms though.
Bahia Honda is good for shore snorkeling, go to Key Largo or Key West for one of the offshore excursion snorkeling trips.

another place to stay in Islamorada is the Day's Inn Suites. $$$, but fantastic views of the flats---gorgeous. We like to get take out from Village Gourmet, nearby, and just sit out on the balcony mid-day or evening. And good place for beers and view is Whale Harbor, upstairs over the charter boats. Advantage to Islamorda is you're closer to Key West when you start the next part of your trip, too.

Second the recommendation of Hampton Inn in Islamorada, better than any other HI I have ever stayed in. Huge pool, nice "beach" front.
If you like French food and don't mind spending some money, Chanticleer South is fantastic. The owner formerly owned Chanticleer in Nantucket, probably the best restaurant on the island and has retire to Islamorada to cut back from 180 dinners a night to 20!
