Kauai With Teens

We will be in Kauai next month with our two sons ages 20 and 16. They both enjoy music, art & photography. Anyone familiar with the local music scene? I know there isn't much "nightlife" happening on Kauai but I thought maybe there was a local hangout they could go to. We will be staying in the Poipu area. Also any favorite "hole in the wall" restaurants? We like any type of food, especially ethnic food!

Hi, I can't think of the name at the moment, but there is live music at the restuarant on the corner of the shopping area. You can't miss it because it is all that is open past 9pm usually. I really like to eat at the Dali Deli. I also hit the Italian place in the far back right corner of the main shopping area and the small mexican place. Guys usually like Bubba's Burgers too. We also like the family owned La Bamba.

I'm talking about the Poipu area in the top of that post. Also, when we lived in Poipu the Hyatt had a club.

Kauai is a real hippie area. I always get the scoop at the main health food store.

While enjoying the twin falls at Wailua we met a young Hawaiian guy named Phil selling handmade drums off the back of his pickup truck. We talked about our common interest in music and he invited us to a local concert he was performing at that night at Lydgate State Park. (He also performs at the Gaylord's luau.)

The concert was a unique experience. At Lydgate there is a covered sitting area with a "stage" and picnic tables. The dance floor was packed with young and old, dogs, children. Everyone was more or less dressed hippie style. It was like going back to Woodstock. Musical acts consisted of local talent such as "Maria Mango". We were the only tourists there. I believe it is common for them to gather at Lydgate. Perhaps your sons will be lucky enough to happen upon Phil or one of these gatherings.

I think the live music that island mom is referring to is at Keoki's Paradise. We enjoyed the music there when we went. It's on a corner of a shopping mall in Poipu.

While we were there last month, there was a great Jazz group playing at the "Happy Talk Lounge" at Hanalei Bay Resort. It was 2 nights a week. I know Sunday was one of the nights, not sure of the other. They also have live music down in Hanalei at the Deli/Bar in the old school house across from Zelo's.
