Malasadas in Kauai.
I'd never had a malasada before our trip to Kauai last year. I have fallen in love with these delictable little morsels of love. At Koloa Days last year they were making them in the food tent and I will never forget the taste of them. We are going back to Kauai next week and I am getting excited. Help! I have malasadas on the brain, so to speak. We got good ones at the Kauai Bakery, but where else on the island can one find the finest malasadas? I'm counting on you guys!

If you have a copy of Ultimate Kauai, they have a listing for "Malasadas" under East Shore dining, for a lady who makes them and sells them "in front of the Ben Franklin/Ace Hardware store on Rice Street near Hoolako Street in Lihue, Saturday and Sunday only".
And no, we didn't have any.

There is the tent in front of Ace Hardware on Rice Street in Lihue. Sometimes there is a malasada stand in front of K-Mart, don't know what happened to the Walmart tent that used to be there. There is a bakery in the Kukui Grove shopping center. If you are going to be there on July 4th, there will be malasadas for sale at the stadium.

Champion Malasadas are the best on Oahu available on a daily basis..they come hot out of the oil. Leonards are okay too, but Champion's can be reheated in the micro better.
Of course the very, very best malasadas in the entire state are at the Punahou Carnival! Only available the first Friday and Saturday in February, and only 25 cents each. Prepare yourself for long lines with a taste of heaven at the end! [spoken with some bias by a former carnival chair who has sugared thousands of malasadas ]

Well Kal, I think we need to have a GTG when you come next time!
The Punahou Carnival is a fun event to attend if you are here in FEbruary. Rides, white Elephant sale, Art gallery, Jams and jellies booth with student-made mango chutney, lilikoi butter, guava jelly, surinam cherry jelly and more, and lots of booths with local eats. One of those things to do as a tourist that give you a peek into the local community.
And while I'm on the topic, it's Bon Dance season in Hawaii...Really fun to visit...watch (or join in) the dances and eat really good food. They are at different temples each week. the schedule is printed in the Honolulu Advertiser.
