On another thread about N. Shore rentals, Sarah and another poster said that Na Pali Properties is building a new complex in Ha'ena. Can anyone give some more info on this--specific location, size, etc.? Thank you.

Any replies? hoping this isn't going to change the character of the north shore too much, would like to know more.

I first saw (painting) poster of the proposed property. I just assumed it was an absurd look at what would happen
if building took place in Haena. The complex was perched right in the choicest area near Makana Point (Bali Hai). This poster said something to the effect of; if you build paradise will be gone. Checking out Napali Properties along the main drag in Hanalei, I saw the same complex, VERY similar poster and this time a promotion that read something to the effect of own your dream of paradise buy a timeshare in Haena. Don't know if building has been approved. I only saw these two prospective drawlings but the complex looked larger than Princeville Sheraton if that gives you any idea.

Seems like residents on Kauai are constantly battling gated communities and invasive construction.

Sarah, thank you for sharing what you observed. I hope this is only someone's idea, and not something that is actually in the works. Surely that area must be zoned to protect it from over development!! After reading your original post I went to the site of the newspaper on Kaua'i and did a search. I found some articles about neighborhood opposition to things like someone building a 2nd house on a lot in Ha'ena. But also articles about townhouses that have sold out before construction is completed, and large residential development around po'ipu. Also article about how long-time n. shore residents have lost their homes, when long-term rental houses are converted to vacation rentals. I hope the county will find a way to control development so island residents will be able to afford to live there, and we vacationers will still be able to enjoy the natural beauty.

When I was there every night live court room proceedings discussing the development of gated community were going on. The community won in stopping the project. The theme that kept coming up when I tuned in was "do we want another kihei on Kauai". But these battles seem constant how long are people going to be able to put energy into this kind of preservation.

The arguments the contractors put forth is we provide jobs. What is very obvious and if you know any construction worker is that often these mainland companies bring their own construction people along. You can see the influx of Mexican construction workers while many Hawaiians head to the mainland for steadier construction work. Jobs or no jobs it is only a matter of time before we do see Kauai develop like Maui. This is a constant battle for Kauai residents.

If you follow the Star bulletin which is not very good at reporting these disturbances at all you will see battles to keep the old bridge and other small disputes. You don't hear about initiatives to test crops on Kauai that could pose profound environmental damage.Crops that the federal goverment would not consider testing on the mainland. No negative press when someone like Oprah Winfrey buys up a hunk of what I think (don't know) is seeded lands near Hana. Seeded lands or not she bought many acres and that should bring about at least questioning. Instead we only heard praise for promising not to develop. Yeah and why is building even and option?

I want to support environmental groups based on Kauai as a start. Seems like so many of locals are poor and the people with money have bulldozers.

Aloha Thought you would be interested to read about Military Chemical tests that exposed protected Forest reserves on the big island. This would have never happened on the mainland!

Thanks, Sarah. I think I need to contact the Sierra Club there, to see how I can help, I know they are doing a lot of work to conserve the land. Other than that I don't know of any specific groups on Kaua'i-- do you?
