Going to Hawaii for honeymoon in February. Spending 6 nites in Kauai. Not sure where to stay....Princeville or Hyatt Regency? Concerned a little about the rain in Princeville. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

no need to worry about the rain because your biggest concern is the high surf on the north side of the island in the winter months. The south shore is where you want to be.

Anna....thanks! Is the high surf going to prohibit us from doing any of the Island's activities? For instance the Zodiac trip off the coast?

Thanks....has anyone been to the northern part of Kauai in mid-Feb. and not had a problem with the weather? Or been limited by the high surf?

Doug - we travel to Kauai every year in early-mid February, staying one week in Poipu, one week in Princeville. From our experiences, I can only tell you that you never know what you're going to get on EITHER side of the island - for example, this past year, our first week in Poipu brought 4 straight days of gloomy, rainy weather, while our week in Princeville actually was quite lovely and sunny much of the time. As far as we're concerned, the bottom line is this - assuming you're renting a car (and you really should), if you don't like the weather in Princeville on a certain day, drive south to Poipu, and if still no good there, continue on to the west side of the island, because if you can't find sun there, you probably won't find it anywhere on Kauai! The trick is to be as flexible with your plans as possible to accomodate all kinds of weather possibilities. (I did read a posting on another Kauai thread that offered the theory that because it's been an unusually wet summer there, it's supposed to be an unusually dry winter, but who knows?!) Have a great trip, wherever you wind up staying!

Agree with the above poster, that you can never be absolutely certain what weather you will get in February. I go to Kauai for the month of Feb each year and generally the weather is pretty good. However, I do stay on the south side near Poipu. 2 years ago, we ventured to Princeville for a week and had lousy weather, overcast and rainy for about 5 of the 7 days. However, I think it was generally rainy in the islands that week. February is winter in Hawaii and there is always a chance of rain, btu it is ofet sunny too. Last year we had pretty high trade winds for about a week or so, and then 3 weeks of just great weather. It can really be a mixed bag. Also if the trade winds are high, it will definitely effect the Napili Coast boating tours. Lastly, I would say, take a chance and just go. Kauia is gorgeous, you will love it. After all, it is still Hawaii, rainy or not. I love it any way it is. Hope you have a great trip.

Hmmm...that's a tough question, easier answered with a longer stay! But - I'll just say that when we split our 2 weeks on the island between north and south shores, we gear our activities around each of those "home base locations", i.e., when we're in Poipu, we localize activities to south and west sides, when north, we do things on the north and east sides. However, as stated in my last post, we've been known to drive all the way down to Poipu if the weather is inclement on the Princeville side. I think the answer to your question lies in how much driving you're willing to do if you anchor yourself on one side or the other for the entire 6 days. Both resorts that you mentioned are terrific and very different from one another, may be nice to sample both. I think no matter which way you decide to structure your stay, you won't go wrong! (Sorry if this gives you more questions than answers!!!)

Thanks....I think you're right. The reason I ask is that the last thing I need on my honeymoon is to be staying in the North and it rain for 6 days. That's why I was thinking of splitting the time, especially since I know we'll want to tour around the South/West for a day or two anyway.
