yes it rains in Kauai, but in all of my travels there it has never been a problem. it might rain for an hour in the afternoon. we've been there many different times of year and even in the winter it is so gorgeous. Kauai is IMHO the most beautiful island. I would go anytime!

I love rain......but then again I like Roosters crowing at1am2am3am4am. So the north shore is the place I wanna be. More important for me than the rain in my opinion is the surf. Once upon a time we went to Kauai the week before Christmas and could only swim in the ocean on West Kauai and Hanalei Bay...every other beach was oh so dangerous, even Poipu. Just something else to consider.

I base my trips to Hawaii on the weather at home, not the weather in Hawaii. I go when it's crappy here, i.e. January or February. I've been to Kauai (Poipu) three times, never had more than a few hours of rain. Rained a bit on the Big Island, but not much. In any event, rain and 80 degrees is a great improvement over rain and 38 degrees.

Agree completely with tucsonartist..
ANY of the Hawaiian islands can get rain, any time of year, especially on their windward (lusher, wetter)sides. For ex, on Kauai, that'd be the North Shore; on Big Iskand, it'd be the HIlo side.
I've seen more rain on trips to Maui, BI (Hilo) and especially Oahu (in Hnl) than on trips to Kauai. And when it rained in Kauai on the north shore, it was brief, in the late afternoons, followed by beautiful rainbows, the sight of fresh waterfalls in the mountains, and the scent of flowers. Come to recall, those conseequences of Hawaiian rain showers are not limited to the island of Kauai. The Southern dry side (Popipu area) of Kauai is less likely to have rain at any time of year.
See www.wunderground.com for predications of weather at the times you choose. Aloha, and have fun planning!

If you're really concerned about the weather, then summer is the best time to go, but all around right now and October are the best times to go to Hawaii. Fewer people (kids are back in school and the weather is still decent on the Mainland), better prices and the weather is usually still good.

Aloha! We've done many January Kauai trips, some with lots of rain, others with not a drop but always nicer than being home during the darkest, dampest days of winter. Having said that though, we spent two weeks on the North Shore last summer and loved it! We did have some rain and surf, remnants of a stalled S. Pacific hurricane, and lots of mosquitos but being able to swim at the North Shore beaches (especially Lumahai) was a real treat and we made good use of calm water and gorgeous scenery.
We've done a number of Big Island trips, too, and as long as we've stayed on the Kona/Kohala coasts, we've had beautiful weather, even in December.
If you want to do Kauai outside of the summer months, I'd stay in Poipu. And remember, it's the rain that make Kauai so incredibly green.
