We're going to Kauai this July. We already have a condo lined up in Princeville for a week, but were planning on staying the first two nights in Poipu to play golf, snorkel and tour the botanical gardens. The Hyatt, our top choice, is sold out for our dates. Since we're doing the condo thing already, we want to stay in a hotel/resort. Is the Sheraton a good alternative, or is there something better?

I have tried hotels.com, orbitz, expedia, etc. Am I missing anything?

Have you tried the hotel directly? Whaler's Cove would be my first choice, regardless. I really don't like Sheraton.

The Sheraton is on a beautiful beach and I hear the oceanfront rooms are right on the water. Avoid the garden rooms, though.

There aren't that many hotel choices in Poipu. There is the Sheraton,but if it were me I'd try to book an oceanfront/beachfront condo at Kiahuna or as G'lou suggested Whaler's Cove. I'll be in Kaua`i in July too. There are going to be lots o' fodorites on that dreaded island this summer!

Try Whaler's Cove, it's very Beautiful. We loved it there for 3 night's in 1999. It's in the Poipu area...

The Hyatt is huuuuge. I doubt it is sold out. It is likely that all the rooms available on travelocity, orbitz, etc. are gone but I would try the hotel directly before giving up altogether. Beautiful grounds.

Wow, we are staying at the Hyatt in Aug., and I can't believe they are sold out for July. I wonder if your time is connected with the July Fourth holiday?
Did you try the Marriott Waiohi Beach Club in Poipu? While not a mega resort, it has a nice swimming beach.

Stay at the centrally-located Marriott in Lihue. There is a related post on this page. Sounds like a good "destination resort" and not a far drive from the South/Poipu area...

We have stayed at the Hyatt and the Sheraton. I agree the Hyatt is nicer, but I do not agree to stay away from the Sheraton. It is a decent property and the rooms are nice. We had a garden view and I agree that we would have liked the ocean view better, mainly because the garden view are across the street from the main beach front buildings and that is where the bars, dining, etc are located. When we were there the rates included breakfast (very good spread) and evening mai-tais (all you could drink with no limit during the one hour time), music and hula dancers. The beach at the Sheraton is great and the grounds are very pretty. The Hyatt has the very cool "river" type pool wandering through the property. Word of warning: there is a wonderful jewelry store in the lobby with a great selection of Tahitian Pearls - an expensive souvenir that my wife loves dearly!

I guess what I am trying to say is that the Sheraton would be just fine.

We're going about a week after July 4. I was also very surprised that the hotel is completely sold out, but there it is.

The Marriott Waiohi Beach Club is also booked. It appears that most of the units at Whaler's Cove require a 3 night stay. I ended up booking an Ocean Front room at the Sheraton for now.
