Kauai - cheap family lodging

Hello! I planned a wonderful vacation to St. John 2 years ago with the help of the Fodor's message boards.

Now I am planning a trip to Kauai - this time it will be 3 couples & a baby traveling in late March. We are looking for a condo or rental house with a full kitchen. From what I hear, the south shore might be the recommended shore in March?

Any advice for the least expensive place to stay for our group size at that time of the year?

You are probably going to need two condos.

What price do you consider "cheap"?

These three agencies handle properties in the Poipu area. There is a wide variety in amenities, location and price. Take a look to see what is available and at what price point.

You will find some fairly reasonably priced 3 and 4 bedroom homes.

Also, take a look at vrbo.com (Vacation Rental By Owner). We found a good deal thru them & you can look at all different parts of the island.

It really does help people make recommendations if you define what you mean by "cheap". How much is the per night budget?

I would say our 7-night budget is roughly $1500-$2500. We need a full kitchen & would prefer 3 bedrooms & access to a pool. Thanks for all the replies so far - very helpful!

Here's a link a little ways past Poipu.

Kekaha also has some homes big enough for your group check

That is a very low budget. March is a busy season, so you are not going to find off-season rates.

Your budget is too low for Waimea Plantation.

Don't be shocked if you need to increase your lodging budget as you'll be there in high season. A rental that will go for $2000 a week in the low season may be listed as much as $1000 a week more in high season.

If you can put the trip off until the middle of April or later you could save a lot of money or get a nicer place. Start looking on vrbo as you can save some $$ by not going through an agency.

How about dividing up and looking for 2 units? Seems it would give you a lot more options than looking only for a 3-bedroom place.

There are some very nice 3+ bedroom condos at Regency Villas, which is part of Poipu Kai. They are large and new-ish.
Because they are not oceanfront or oceanview, the rate is within your price range. Here are two agencies with units that you can view on-line:
