economic condos on Kauai and BI

We are heading back to hawaii late next November. We will be in Oahu only one night to do pearl Harbor and then on to the BI and Kauai. There will be four of us, my husband and I and 2 sons, ages 10 and 11. Last year we spent a week in Maui and stayed at the Kaanapalli Shores in a 2 bedroom condo and it suited us fine. This trip we are once again watching our budget on lodging and we are looking for condo suggestions. On kauai we want to stay in Poipu for weather reasons. Doesn't have to be right on the ocean, but quiet in a tropical surrounding with a nice pool. On the BI we are looking for something in the Kona/Keahou area, quiet with a pool. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi Tammy,

I have a vacation rental in poipu - Kaua'i - 2bd 2/bth towhnouse at reasondable rates. Not sure what dates you would be in Kauai. If you shoul be be interested in my site - you can check out vrbo.com - Listing #16120. $90US/night includes rent and tax. the only thing is you would need a $300 deposit to hold the unit - $200 being the refundable damage deposit, with $100 kept back for maid clean - if not there are many other sites you can visit on vrbo - but I keep my rates low - and usually get fully booked.

Tammy: There are many condo choices in Kona/Keahou, in a wide range of prices. Many condos in this area have pools. But as for quiet, most are also right on the main drag (Alii Drive), so traffic and road noise is an issue with some but not all of these properties. If you could give us a price range you're interested in, we (or at least I) could give you specific recommendations.

In regards to cost, we were hoping to spend $200 a night or less-kind of cheap for sure. However, being right on the water is not that important to us!
Thanks for all of your replies!

On Kauai you can generally get Kuhio Shores for under $200 per night. These condos are located next door to the Beach House restuarant which people regularly reserve because of the great sunset views from here. vrbo.com has good rates or you can go through suiteparadise.com for many choices of condos at reasonable prices. We used suite paradise for a great stay at whalers cove. Kiahuna Plantation is in a great location on a nice stretch of beach in Poipu and can be in your price range.

We stayed on Kauai a few yrs ago with my 12 yr old son. The condo was in Waikomo Stream Villas. It was quit inexpensive but very nice and large (over 1000 sq ft). Had 1 bed room but a sleep sofa.....nice lanai and right next to pool. Is not on the water but down the road from some shopping and restaurant with golf course across street. I believe it was unit #323. See http://www.gloriasvacationrentals.com/#Condominiums

When on the Big Island we usually rent a condo for a few days at the Kona Reef, which is on the ocean and has a lovely pool and spa. It is walking distance to downtown Kona. There are one and two bedroom units available. Each one is individually owned, so check them out. I have rented a couple through www.vrbo.com with good success. Have fun, I love the Big Island!

We stayed at Poipu Kai in a very spacious unit in the Sands section that I think would suit you very well - check it out at http://www.vrbo.com/11947

The decor was not updated but the condo was very clean and in good condition, had a nice view and a great lanai, good pool, very good cross ventilation, no a/c needed in August - I would definitely recommend it.

Great advice as usual from GloriaE. Kona Reef was actually my second choice in that price range for Kona, with the Kona Makai being first. In either case get a unit on one of the higher floors (the Kona Makai has 3 floors and the Kona Reef 4) for their better views, and as close to the ocean as possible. (The closer you are to the ocean, the further set back you are from Alii Dr. road noise.)

We stayed at Lawai Beach Resort which is across the street from a beach that has good snorkeling. I would recommned either the Banyan or Alii buildings. This is also across from the Beach House restaurant. It's only a 5 minute drive to Poipu Beach Park. You cant rent through Suite-Paradise which has other rentals too.

Search google for the Makahuena in Poipu. We spent a week there in November and it was very nice and reasonable. Always sunny. Saw whales in the distance, lots of turtles.

Aloha Tammy,

Not sure if your air is booked already, but fyi, the Triple Crown of Surfing Championship happens on the north shore O'ahu, mid Nov-mid Dec...

It's quite a show. It might be something especially fun for your sons to check out... I saw Andy Irons crowned world Champ in '02, and it was just incredible. Very memorable.

Food for thought if you're still flexible w/ your air.

Another vote for Makahuena. We've stayed there twice already. Try for oceanfront - you can't get any closer to the water! The last trip we rented through here - good rates.
