Kapa'a Krawl
Am in the process of spending 3 weeks on Kauai - yes, it's totally fabulous. We come here as often as possible, but one thing new, or more prevalent than previous years: traffic is h-e-a-v-y in Kapa'a between 7 and 9 AM and especially between 3:30 and 7:00 PM daily.
For those who don't know, Kapa'a is roughly half way between the North and South shore. We have been averaging about an hour's wait in traffic if we try and proceed through Kapa'a at around 4:30 in the afternoon. BTW, that's on any day, including Sundays. Thought you'd all want to plan accordingly, as I am seeing some pretty tight itineraries on this message board. Good news is that it's stunning scenary to wait in! Happy travels!

Mahalo for the update, sounds like trouble in paradise, the delays we experienced on our last visit in March seemed related to construction activity with lane closures. Is this still the case, or is it just increased volume of traffic?

Aloohaaa,
I heard it was completed but the traffic has always been a hassle thru that part of the beautiful island due to the 3-4 stop lights within about 10' of each other.
We just take the bypass road thru the cane haul field and pass by the Sleeping Giant . It brings you out either by Beazer's/ABC Store in Kapaatown or up past Bubba's Burgers if you know the secret.

Mellyz-Hula Pie is a BIG OL' HUNK o' ice cream pie.All the major "ice cream food groups" Very good. It can be split amongnst 4 people. I'm not a big ice cream guy until I get to Kauai.
"Mr Lapperts.....meet Mr Kal".
Dolciani-The Sleeping Giant aka Da Big Guy is the mountain right across from the Coconut Marketplace that looks like a large person laying on his back looking skyward. Great tune up hike for the NaPali. 360degree view and you can see King Kong (it's over by Anahola and Ono Burgers) and the rest of the CocoCoast from his head.

We were in a traffic jam in Kauai just last week, at 1:30 in the afternoon. We saw that the traffic was stopped on the main highway, between Kapaa and Lihue, so we decided to take the bypass. Guess what, it was backed up too. We ended up stuck in traffic for more than a half an hour. Later we found out that it was due to big waves washing over the road. They had pictures in the paper the next day it made a big mess.

t'zona-I checked out the Garden Isle Gazette about the big waves and found out that they received some of the largest waves in over 20-30yrs to hit the normally calm beach by Wailua Bay/Lae Nani Condos.
Musta been awesome!
