Road conditions in Kauai, HI

This may be a little far-fetched to ask so early, but...We are planning a trip to Kauai in October 2006. From what I've read part of a highway was taken out from the breaking of a Dam-near Lihue. Our original plan was to fly into Lihue, stay in Poipu for a few and then drive up to the North Shore. Any guess as to the passability? I know it is hard to gage at the moment but any thoughts would be appreciated.

Seven months from now?? Don't worry about the road. Worry more about the traffic. Always lousy along the east shore. Plan on traffic jams at almost any time during the day.

It's currently a one-lane road for one small stretch, with police directing traffic 24/7.

Hopefully, our highway will be completely repaired by October -- but even if it's still under construction, you'll be fine.

jpw...just returned yesterday, and the road is completely passable (2 lanes)Officials told us that it would probably be several months before it would be completely back to "normal". You will have no problems other than traffic delays going from Lihue to P'Ville during rush hours...try to avoid if possible. Enjoy your trip...pray for sunshine!!!!

CORRECTION:

Yes, the highway is 2 lanes -- EXCEPT for the short stretch near mile marker 22, where it's one-lane only (traffic directed by on-duty police).

We will be on the island 5/24/06. I am glad to hear that it is pretty much passable as of now. Thank you Auntie and visormom for you replies.
