If you can get the Pod 39 for $85, it's a better deal than the YMCA and in a more convenient location. Tell him to try Kyo-chon for Korean Fried Chicken wings (corner 32nd/5th Ave).

I stayed at the Pod hotel on 39th Street during Hurricane Sandy with a GF, even with two women in the room it wasn't too bad, very impressed, nice room and very clean. Plus, there's a new restaurant run by April Bloomfield in the lobby, you can't go wrong!
