Is there an easy path from Austin to College Station?

We are going "school" shopping in November. We want to tour UT in Austin and then maybe head over to College Station to see Tx A and M. Is there an easier way to travel to those two cities? And then we head up to Dallas to see family. Also, would you know how long this might take, driving from Austin to CS? Thanks travelers.

Heavens...It's an easy and pleasant drive....about 85 miles. And you get to see some "real" Texas countryside which I personally enjoy being from LA.Actually some friends thought they were in Connecticutt when they arrived in Austin!!Then from CLL to DAL is about 40 miles to the I-45,which I dont like myself but there is not much alternative. Some friends have gone the other way,up north Texas country road about 90 miles or so up to Waco and the I35.To me thats more scenic even tho it may take a bit longer. The drive from CLL to Waco is past a lot of Texas farming communities, a lot of it really old.My TA's roots are that part of Texas so I had a little inside info.Once you hit the freeway its a straight shot up to DAL. I hope this helps!

I think Austin to College Station is close to 100 miles. I think the basic route is US 290 East then North on 21. I can check out my map at home tonight...If I remember!

forgot to mention, you might check the UT and A&M websites when you plan a trip. November is Football season and you might want to come when there isn't a home game. Hotels - and UT/A&M are packed when there is a game.

Driving is definitely your best bet between these cities. College Station has only a very small airport! Besides, it is a nice drive.

DEFINITELY make sure there is not a home foot ball game on the weekend you'll be visiting. You won't be able to find a hotel room in CS if there is a game!

Keep in mind that there are a LOT of other schools in Texas besides the Division 1 biggies. I'm an alumni of one of the smaller schools, and I got a fabulous scholarship!

Thanks all for your replies and help.

Christie, she would be coming from out of state. NOt sure that many scholarships would apply. But if you want to be more specific, I am all ears. thanks for the info.

We are also going to look at SMU, my old school. I think she will settle in CA, but we might as well give her some choices. All of my family is in Dallas, so family would be close by if she should choose a TX school.

And thanks for the heads up on the games, I will check the schedule now.

The school I am referring to is Angelo State University, www.angelo.edu Look at their Carr Scholarship Program. I had a couple of out-of-state roommates who received it, and it took their tuition down to the in-state rates. ASU isn't a fancy school like the Division 1 schools, but I got a good education and really enjoyed my time there!

It is a little over 100 miles. 2 ways to go. TX-47 to US290 or US-79 to TX-6. The latter is a little longer but may be faster. Either way should be between 2 and 2-1/2 hours.

Since you went to SMU, no need to explain the differences in the two campuses.

If you want to come when there aren;t any games planned, the weekend of Nov. 20 will be best. Both teams take the week off before playing each other Thanksgiving weekend.

I think you ought to go on a football game weekend. The activities on fotball weekends really highlight the college experience at those schools. Even if you don't like footbal.

Any of those schools are good choices, although being a Longhorn, I think UT outshines them. While you are there, you might as well look at Southwestern and Trinity.
