Is Potsdam,New York a nice place to live??

Hi,My nephew might be relocating to Potsdam,New York and I was wondering if it was a nice town to live in? Are the apartments reasonable? Good pay? Cost of living...exc...exc...
And also if someone could tell me the name of the local newspaper so he can look for apartments that would be great!
Thanks for an info or comments.
Debbie

Potsdam is a small town in the far northern reaches of NY, near the Canadian border. Home to Clarkson U, and not much else. Population about 15,000, the entire 1500sq mile county about 60k.

It's not generally considered a place that people move to arbitrarily or due to any high quality of living index. They either are drawn by Clarkson, have a specific job bringing them there, or really, really enjoy winter.

Can't help with apartments - might want to check sources at Clarkson.

J62,Thanks for the information. My nephew has a job offer there. He's coming up from Orlando,Florida vowing never to return again because he doesn't like the heat at all.
I told him he was going from one extreme (lots of heat/humidity) to the other (lots of snow/sleet/freezing temps) but he insists he would rather have the cold.
Mmmm,Go figure...

I'm with your nephew. You can always put on more clothes - but in Florida you cant leave the house 6 months of the year.

(I have a couple of sets of relative who retired there and left after 2/3 years due to the unberable heat - a couple came back to New York, while others settled in Virginia - but still come north in the middle of the summer.)

Not that I'm recoing Potsdam in particular - but anything to escape FL.

I'm all for escaping the heat, but average winter low in Potsdam is 20deg lower than NYC.

Wow,Thanks everybody for your comments, suggestions and links!
Yeah I'm kinda wondering what he's going to think after a winter in Potsdam myself.I live in Upstate New York (50 miles north of Albany,NY)and it's cold and wintery enough for me!
Couldn't imagine going any farther north!
Brrrr,I'm shivering just thinking about it!!

Deb- If I'm correct, Potsdam is near the Tug Hill Plateau, which normally gets the most amount of snow in the winters.

I don't have much to offer about Potsdam but I would think apartments are very affordable there. Potsdam is north of the Tug Hill Plateau. The Tug Hill Plateau does gets tons of snow due to it's location being east of Lake Ontario. Potsdam being north of the lake does not get lake effect snow. Yes it is cold there but they do get more sunshine there than we do in Central NY. Sunshine is really the best weather condition in my book. Even if it's cold I don't mind as long as that sun is shining.
A good link to check out would be

The Tug Hill Plateau?? I've never heard of that before...
I'm sure he'll be excited about the extra snow he'll have in that area?!!
I looked up classifieds for that area and yes their apartments are alot less than what his apartment costs in Orlando,Florida.
That's a good thing. All he needs is to be offered good pay and benefits and it won't take him long to pack and go!
Thanks again for the great comments and links!!
