Is automobile insurance available for everyone?

Hello I am David,
I want to know one thing.
In US, Is automobile insurance available for everyone?

I am asking this question because I need to buy travel insurance.

Any suggestion and idea would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I think I understand what you're asking. You're visiting the US and planning to rent a car, and you're asking if you can buy auto insurance? Is that correct?

The answer is generally yes as long as you have a valid drivers license and accepted form of payment.

The car rental co will gladly sell you auto insurance - several different varieties including collision insurance to cover the full value of the car (CDW), personal accident insurance to cover medical costs of you & passengers, and liability insurance to cover damage to other parties.

There is no requirement to buy these supplemental insurance from the rental car co. Many credit card companies will cover these (check with your own card issuer), and many people are covered by their private (home) auto insurance when renting a car.

When I say the rental car co's will gladly sell it to you is because it can add a lot of $ to your rental car bill. A lot.

It's almost always cheaper to add car rental insurance to a regular travel insurance policy (normally about half the cost for similar coverage). Almost all the U.S. travel insurance companies offer these policies. You don't say where you're from, but travel insurance in your home country may also offer such plans (UK plans, for example, are often really good).

You can buy a collision-damage waiver and liability insurance from a car-rental company, but it may cost more than the daily car rental.

I am assuming that you are not a US resident.

You may find it impossible or at least very difficult and expensive to rent a car if you are under 25 years of age.

You may find it difficult to rent cars in certain places and at certain times if you are young.

Some cars rented in some states may not be driven to other states.

In other words, do not expect to walk up to a rental counter and walk away with a set of keys without inquiring in advance. Unless someone responds here who has experience in the car rental industry, you may get an imperfect answer (including mine!)

It's available for every licensed driver. For a price.

I'm not sure I unnderstand the question. It's not legal to drive a car in the US without insurance. No rental company will rent you a car without insurance on the car. You should also have insurance that covers you, your pasenger and any thing/body that you hit.

You can;t just buy car insurance as a visitor to the US, since the price depends on the type of car you have and your age and driving record - and typically insurance companies coeryou only long-term.

Your credit card (which you must have to rent in the US, unless you leave a large cash deposit - often $1000) MAY cover you - but rarely does unless it's a US-based card - so check.

You can buy auto coverage as part of travel insurance.

Or you can buy it as part of a car rental - if you do this you will usually get a better price by renting in advance from your home country (otherwise insurance is VERY expensive).

If you give more specific someone can probably provide a more specific answer.

The best place to start is with your current insurance company where you now live... If you have insurance now it may cover you while you drive in the US and all you would need is a card indicating so.... If not ask for some guidance from them first, maybe they can sell you what you need... If you rent a car in the US they will sell you all the insurance you need, both collision and liability but it will be very very expensive. If you plan on renting a car check directly with one of the car rental agencies where you are that has car rentals offices here in the US, Avis or Hertz for example.... A good travel agent or your local auto club, the counterpart of AAA(American Automobile Assn) could also help..

Summary. If you rent a car and are from outside US, the rental company will almost certainly force you to buy their insurance - and it will close to double listed cost of renting the car. (US residents are often covered on their own private auto insurance or get coverage from a credit card benefit). Evenif you buy regular travel insurance (that covers medical, trip cancellation, etc.) that has auto coverage, they will still make you buy their insurance.

You can not get a separate auto insurance policy in the US if you do not own the car.

If you own a car, the insurance requirement varies by state. Many require insurance, but some do not.
