interesting place halfway between Charleston and Atlanta?

We will be flying to Charleston/ Savannah for the 7/4 weekend. We have a friend who lives in Atlanta that we want to meet for a day. However, it's 4 to 5 hours driving from Atlanta to either Charleston or Savannah, so the compromise is for us to meet approximately halfway between Charleston/Atlanta or Savannah/Atlanta. Any interesting place you could suggest that we could spend a day together? Moreover, is that any cotton(or other agriculture that is not found in the Northeast) field/farm in that area that we could visit?

I don't know this area very well, but after fiddling with Mapquest for a while, I think Columbia, SC is the best bet. Your friend will need to drive for about 3 hours, while you will only need to drive 2 hours.

As for visiting a farm, I don't know of any official "tourist farms". I generally find farmers are more than happy to spend time with people who are respectful.

I'd but curious where you finally meet your friend.

It's really much closer to Atlanta (about 1 1/2 hours from Atlanta), but there's a Ritz at Lake Oconee. It's a very nice resort area.

There's a great Dairy Queen in Dublin, Georgia that really rocks on Friday and Saturday nights. (I'm serious about this.)

There's the orginal capital of Georgia - Loiusville - about 60 minutes southwest of Augusta. Unfortunately, there's nothing to do there. There are some cotton fields are throughout that area, however.

You might find it more convenient to meet somewhere in Macon, GA - about 1 1/2-2 hrs from Atlanta or Savannah. Their chamber of commerce would probably recommend something you would like - B&B, restaurants, tourist attractions, etc. and you would definitely get a "southern" experience!

Lake Oconee would be nice, but further for you than your friends. I would say Augusta is closer to halfway between Charleston and Atlanta. I think there are gardens to see there, and the Master's golf course. Macon has the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, and nearby Whistle Stop Cafe (Fried Green Tomatoes movie) in Juliette. Since it's the 4th, you might be able to find a small town 4th of July celebration. Not sure about cotton fields, but the above poster is correct in that contacting the Chamber of Commerce might yield results about a local farm to visit. Good luck.

I agree with Mike that Columbia is a better bet. Its about 3 hours from Atlanta and about 2 hours from downtown Charleston. Your friends would enjoy Columbia more than Macon. There are numerous museums (SC State Museum, EdVenture, Columbia Museum of Art, McKissick Museum), historic house tours, the Riverwalk, USC campus, Riverbanks Zoo, and also Five Points and the historic Congaree Vista.

(I've heard from native Georgians that Macon is NOT the nicest part of their state. Columbia has done a lot in recent years and is quickly becoming an extremely nice medium size city).

I suggest staying in The Vista or Five Points. Depending on your friends' budget, go with The Whitney in 5pts, Claussen's Inn, or the historic Hampton Inn or Comfort Suites in The Vista. A new Hilton is going up next to the new convention center, but hasn't been finished (or started, I don't think?) yet.
