On the Empire Builder if you have an upstairs Roomette, the sleeping car attendant will carry your heaviest bag upstairs for you when you get on board in Seattle. Since you are traveling solo, you can put a bag on the upper bunk instead of leaving it in the downstairs baggage area. Being able to take a hot shower is another plus to having the roomette. Tip your SCA before getting off the train in MSP.
Depending on where you want to go in NYC, it might be easier or cheaper to fly to Newark (EWR) instead of to La Guardia. Travel into New York Penn station is easy from the Amtrak station at Newark airport.
I've heard good things about Road Scholar but have not done a trip with them. My favorite volunteer program is Passport in Time with the US Forest Service. This summer they have some projects digging for dinosaur bones.

I love overnight trains, and I've found Amtrak roomettes to be surprisingly comfortable -- I hope you do, too!

Thanks for the update, traveler24, and best wishes for many future journeys.

very nice. Have a fabulous trip or trips. Hey, even us younguns have trouble accepting our limitations. I am not so good at listening to my body and that results in injury usually. Nothing worse than a stupid, completely preventable injury.

i hope you return with a trip report on Minneapolis. I’d love to hear about both the train and the road scholar adventures!

I'm also looking forward to hearing about your report from Minneapolis. It is supposed to be an up-and-coming city. There's also interesting history there. The Twin Cities were a place for many Germans, Czechs and others to settle.
