I'm in Chesapeake, VA (next to Norfolk and Va Beach) and about 60 miles from Outer Banks. We were very lucky - lots of trees and limbs down, but non hit our house or vehicles. About 6 sections of our very sturdy fence are down (4 x 4's split!). We were without power from early Thursday afternoon until late Saturday afternoon. Since we are on a well, that meant no water. It is soooo good to be able to flush toilets and take a shower again. We've been working hard cleaning up the mess in the yard. The sound of chain saws fills the air. I think there are still many in our area without power. We own rental property on the Outer Banks (not Ocean front) and tenants report that all is well. So we feel like we really dodged the bullet. We'll try to go get a look at things next week. Our prayers are with all those who have suffered loses.

Fortunately, there was no damage to my house. My neighbor in an adjacent house lost a pine bush and had to cut it down when it fell over. I helped her cut it up in pieces and bag it for the trash people (and got a few small pieces of firewood out of it). If you just leave it out as branches, they don't pick it up until there is a special pick up and we wanted to get rid of it.

I had no power for 24 hours but the water worked and was safe. Elsewhere in Fairfax County people have to boil water but, since I get mine from City of Falls Church, I didn't. Since I have an electric water heater no power meant no hot water but at least I could take a cold shower. Others are in much worse shape nearer to the Outer Banks, so I am not complaining.

While I suffered a 24 hour power outage some of my neighbors are STILL out. I am glad to have power but feel guilty about being in fat city when so many are suffering. Many people are running over to the local recreation center (which has power) to take showers. I did offer to let some of my neighbors shower at my place but no one has yet taken me up on it.

The noise of the chain saw is heard through out the land as people cut up all those downed trees.

And this too will pass. . . .
