In Carmel for two days in July
and am looking for suggestions for places to eat, drink and relax. We're staying and the Stonehouse Inn on 8th between Casanova and Monte Verde. We do plan on hitting Big Sur one of these days for a period of time, but I welcome any advice. We love all kinds of food, but shun the super expensive. Of course we'd love some pretty nice views! Thanks in advance for the advice.

The California Market at the Highland's Inn has really pretty views, it is the casual venue there, located in the Carmel Highland's area. For a nice breakfast, we like Katy's Place in Carmel.
Mission Ranch has nice views from their outdoor patio and good food. In Big Sur, check out the patio at Cielo at the Ventana Inn & Spa. Have fun! ***kim***

We are vacationing in Carmel right now.
One of our favorite restaurants for 30 years is Casanova. Very romantic, outstanding food, pricey, yes, but worth it. Another, more moderately-priced French restaurant is L'Escargot. The chef is the owner--great care in food preparation. We are going there in a couple of hours again.

EAT, DRINK AND RELAX:
Try the Spanish Bay Resort near sundown. They will have the fire pits going and the bagpiper will be playing around the golf course as you enjoy the sunset and ocean view. Great spot to relax, meet people and all for the cost of a drink or two. ROY'S is a good restaurant in the Inn to eat.
BIG SUR area: ROCKY POINT RESTAURANT is about 12 miles south of Carmel on Hwy 1. Great ocean vistas. We go there to sit on the patio, enjoy a drink and the ocean. The restaurant food there is so-so, but you cannot beat the view.
PACIFIC GROVE AREA: FANDANGO'S or JOE ROMBI'S....both great places to eat along with MAX'S. FANDANGO'S has the best atmosphere, but all three have good food and service. Another PG spot with ocean views of Monterey Bay is LATTITUDES...located across from Lover's Point.
Have fun! Don't forget...it will be cool in July...but still great!

You said you didn't want an expensive restaurant. Most, if not all of those previously suggested are expensive. From your inn, walk up hill to Dolores, turn left and on the right side, just before Ocean, is Little Napoli. It's a local's favorite for Italian. Make a reservation if you're here on a weekend.
Another suggestion is to get a picnic lunch at Bruno's on Junipero and 6th. Take it to the beach, along with a blanket and enjoy the sunset.

IMNSHO, Casanova is over-hyped, over-rated, and over-priced. And if you're especially unlucky, they will seat you in a musty annex that appears to have previously been some kind of mexican restaurant, judging from its decor. I've had 3 dinners there over a few year period, and that is my overall assessment.
Some of my favorites include:
The Grill on Ocean Ave (between Dolores & Lincoln).

Little Napoli.

Pâtisserie Boissiere.

I agree with Tom h regarding Casanova. Way too expensive for what you get. Il Fornaio in the Pine Inn has a great bar and the food in very good. In Big Sur, go for lunch at Nepenthe. Get there early (11.00 - 11.30) for the best seat out on the deck for a fantastic view. Not cheap but but always good food.
