Hi Ashley,
We never made it to Oahu that time. Here are some things I had bookmarked.

Just curious, why did you not go to Oahu and what did you do instead? Thanks for your links. I was familiar with two of them...like the first one best but keep hearing about problems with vacation rentals being illegal...what's your thoughts on that?

We went to St. John in the USVI, then Maui and this summer it is back to Kaua'i. Next summer, Fiji or back to the USVI. I'd like to get to Oahu sometime next winter to see the WAVES.
I'm not sure what to think about the illegal rentals. It is not something I thought about until the Haena/Tunnels Beach illegal rental mess blew up. I know that several places that I contacted on Oahu told me that there was a 30 day minimum. Wouldn't that be nice? 30 days in Hawaii?
Good luck.

I would love to go to Fiji! We are going on a Christmas cruise that will go to St. Thomas (as you know next to St. John). I have been there a few times and always enjoy it. Although I prefer Hawaii over the Caribbean, the Caribbean is much closer to me (Michigan). Is there a great website to look on for Fiji info?

Not sure about websites, but the Moon Handbook on the South Pacific is a great source of information on the islands of the South Pacific. The Fiji section is very complete and is good reading.
Tripadvisor has a fairly active Fiji forum with some regulars that know a lot about the islands.
The cruise sounds like fun.

The coup in Fiji is over. From what I read most of the coup actiivity was concentrated in Suva. In Fiji most of the resort activity and tourism takes place on resort islands or smaller island chains away from the the main two islands. From what I heard, places like the Mamanucas and the Yasawas were not adversely effected by the coup and were/are safe to visit.

You're the boss, Donita. If you say next summer, we go next summer. We'll do Fiji first, come home, feed the birds and go away again. What the hell! The GTG might need to be later than July 4th, which is what louloubelle suggested. I must say though, that I think I am planning on a "grand summer tour" (3 to 4 weeks)of Hawaii for my 50th which will be in 2009, so we could plan to GTG then maybe. Whatevah! Life is good, yes?
