Ddcna: Very interesting! And yet lisettmac remembers seeing both - it's funny what memories can do - reminds me of Shelly Winters in her autobiography when she said she would never forget watching President Kennedy being assasinated in Dallas that day.
Shelly remembered all this in great detail - how the TV had been on while she watched the president and First Lady in their motorcade driving past the book depository.
Of course, there was no live coverage of this and the actual film, by bystander Abraham Zapruder, was not released to the public until several years later!
Sorry to get so off-topic but memory is just a fascinating thing to me.

I also thought the golf balls and cat story were urban legends.
However, the Dolly Parton one is real. I've seen the tape where Johnny says he'd "give about a year's salary to see what was in there."

I was watching on the Dolly Parton night- quote as above. Also watched the original on the night that he left the studio and went into the next studio over to yell at Rickles for breaking his favorite cigarette box from his desk, during the previous night when he had been the guest with Bob Newhart as the guest host. Cables etc. everywhere and nothing like today when Letterman just strolls around. The techies looked shell shocked and it was SO funny.

-- Snopes is WRONG!
The "cat" story is true, it's been shown on repeats, but I haven't seen it for quite some years. I was blown away when Johnny denied it one night, because I had seen it. Interestingly, the repeat was shown on TV again not long after his denial. I suspect Johnny was just downplaying it and protecting his rep from such a crude remark (but very funny!)
It reminds me of the denial by Bob Eubanks, of The Newlywed Game, about one wife's comment regarding the strangest place they had ever "done it" (her response, "in the rear"). But this video did eventually turn up, and has been shown on Blooper type shows the past few years.
One time, Johnny had the "weird" science professor on and the professor challenged him to place a piece of string on the floor in a circle about the same size as his waist. Johnny did this, and when they picked it up the string measured about 50 inches and got a lot of laughs. Sometime later, perhaps years, the professor was on again and made the same challenge. Johnny got it right this time however, somewhere around "32-36 inches. The professor was surprised that he did it so well, because most people over-estimate (as with the first time). But not Johnny, nor anyone else, hinted or let on that he had done this trick before.
I remember, even as chidren, we would discuss who was better Johnny, Dick Cavet, or Joey Bishop (with kiss-ass Regis). We now know who was best -- no further discussion needed.

If what I've read is true, all of the tapings from the first decade of the show were erased, so there are no archives from that time period. If the alleged incident happened during that first decade, it would be virutually impossible for the clip to have been shown subsequent to 1972/73. (See letters on Snopes from both Carson and Gabor denying the incident)
Memory is a strange phenomenon, I'll grant you that. I find my own being quite selective these days!!

Many years ago (when the show was still in New York), my mother was looking around a yard sale in a suburb of Cincinnati. She found a box containing what looked like original sheet music. She bought it and on close examination, it turned out to be an original score written by Doc Severinson (sp?), Carson's band leader. She wrote to the show to let them know what she'd found. A few weeks later she received a personal thank you letter from Severinson, along with two tickets to the show. She and my Dad were seated in the front row and before the show started, Doc and Carson himself came out and thanked them for returning his bandleader's music.
Classy guy.
(p.s. apologies in advance if this double posts)

Not to be beating a dead cat, but I once had the same arguement with a friend about whether or not this incident occured. He was convinced it never took place, until he actually saw it some time later. I have seen the clip more than a couple of times (as I said, I was incredulous when Johnny denied it on the air).
Speaking of Doc, he was on Hannity & Combs the other night sharing a few memories. He still tours/performs quite a bit each year.
