How to get from Upper west Side to River Cafe?
To go to dinner at the restaurant from west 75th Street, can anyone advise me the best way to travel? I get the impression that we might be able to do it from the subway at 72nd Street on line 2 or 3? If this is so, what stop would we get off and how do we get to the restaurant from there? Also approximately how long would it take? Alternatively, would we be better off taking a cab? Hoping some locals or others in the know can help. Many thanks.

Well, I would just take a cab.
But if you prefer the subway it looks like (I have never done this) the closest stop to the restaurant is the first A/C stop in Brooklyn. You can get the C at 72/CPW.
To take the Broadway line you would have to either walk across Manhattan from the West side - and across the Brooklyn Bridge - or take the 42 st shuttle to the Lex Ave line down to the Brooklyn Bridge stop - and then walk across the Bridge.
If you go to the MTA web site you can easily download a subway map and look at all the options for yourslf.
But IMHO cab is much easier.

From their website http://rivercafe.com/
it says Take A or C train to High Street/ Brooklyn Bridge. Or Take 2 or 3 train to Clark Street
Here's the UrL for the subway map which you should have anyway

A cab is easier but will be pricey. Maybe subway there and cab home?

Peter-
I've done this trip many times as I live by the River Cafe.
Take the A/C (to High St) or 2/3 (to Clark St) from the Upper West Side.
Both subways have exits right off of Henry Street. Walk DOWN the hill on Henry Street, bearing left when the street ends. Keep heading down the holl on Old Fulton Street. You will go under an overpass. At the end of the street is a ferry landing (basically a short pier). River Cafe is to the right of this (look for all the trees...& it has a little garden in front).
I'd say the total trip time would be about 45 minutes.

Follow suzanne's instructions. We just did this from W 81st to Grimaldi's Pizza (right near the River Cafe) and it was very easy. Just make sure you know where you're going when you get out of the subway station. Look for the bridge and just follow it down to the water.
Have a great time!
