How bad is the drive from Syracuse, NY to East Hartford, Connecticut?

Picture a not-too-experienced 19 yr old driver, alone in the car. Doable?

Very straight forward. NY Thruway to MA Turnpike to I-91. No tricks. If it's snowing, watch out for road condition in the western section of the Masspike. It's pretty hilly and they don't salt as much as they do on the NY Thruway.

I live at about the 1/2 point of the journey and agree with rkkwan completely.

The road is fine. Lots of big scarey trucks along the way. Easy directions, even our ever-lost son could do it. I would suggest daylight trip since the road is incredibly boring and would lend towards fast fatigue or falling asleep.

But I understand your concern - we have a 19 year old son away at college 1000 miles away with a car and have had to answer similar issues.

rkkwan is right on. Tell your driver to watch their speed on the NYS Thruway, it is kind of a boring drive and it would be easy to move along a little too fast without really realizing it. If they stay with the traffic and they will be fine.

If you mean from the I-91 exit on the Mass Pike to East Hartford, then it's a busy highway!

I would warn her to watch very carefully for the switch from the Thruway to the Turnpike. We take that route every time we take our daughter to/from school. We've never missed the exit onto the Turnpike. But we're always afraid we're going to! It's in an area where there are other turn-off options so that makes it a little more confusing. However, they do give you plenty of warning. She just needs to watch for the signs with the pilgrim hat!

Also, we too exit onto I-91 (altho' we go the other direction). Have never had any problems with that.

The exit on the Thruway towards the Masspike is Exit 21A. I believe they have signs that says "I-90 Boston", so it's pretty hard to miss.

Important thing is to NOT take the I-90 exit just before Albany. One can still get to the Masspike that way, but it'll be slower.

I live about 40 miles east of Syracuse and have driven to Hartford area several times and it is a very easy drive. It is actually less miles if you take exit24 then take 90 thru Albany and then reconnect on the Thruway it is called the Berkshire extension but as the previous poster stated it is probably quicker if you just stay on the Thruway and take 21A.
AAA however on Trip Tiks will have you exit at 24 and get off the Thruway. I have done both ways and as long as you avoid rush hour in Albany you probably won't notice much difference.
